There is absolutely no security. We've had two or three bomb threats, and each time they've EMAILED us to let us know what was happening. There's this fat idiot downstairs who mans the door. He falls asleep or watches TV and rarely looks up when someone comes in the door. Asshole would be dead before he noticed anyone come in the door. Skip and I were talking the other night about what we would do if a gunman came into the building. There is no where to barricade ourselves into. The doors have smoky, plexiglass windows that could easily be shot through to get inside. Hell, all they'd have to do is stick their hand inside of the glass and hit the exit button that rests right there. If someone decides to come in and kill us all, we're screwed. I'm terrified.
Anyone else scared of their lack of security at work?

1. My insecurity comes from what appears to be lack of job security...
Which may not be, but why buck the national average?

There are days when the degenerate vermin who shoot all these innocent people may be doing them a favor.

Get a bulletproof vest if you like. I think some light kinds are foldable these days, so it wouldn't be obtrusive.

Carry a taser.

If someone does go psychotic, don't panic and sit there waiting to die. Grab a desk, table, or chair (it may stop a glancing bullet, or slow it enough that it doesn't penetrate too deeply) and rush him. Hit him in the head and don't stop until you can see his brains on the floor.

Then hit him a few more times to make sure. You're dead if you cower, so at least try to fight.

I would be concerned about the drive to work. That shit can kill you.

5. I'm not that worried
There's only one way to get into the campus without a magnetized card, and that's through the parking garage, which has a security office right by the entrance.

In my building, there's a security guard right inside the door.

Although, I suppose most of these safeguards would be useless if the person with a gun was a student or faculty/staff member.

But aside from placing a metal detector at the entrance or sifting through everyone's bags before they're allowed on campus, what can realistically be done?

I refuse to live in fear. If someone really wants to kill people, they'll figure out a way to do it, regardless of security measures.

Now what really needs work is emergency response...I'll agree with you there.

6. This came to my mind today. I'll be alone in the office tomorrow
My assistant takes a personal day on election days, to work as an election judge. I've pretty much decided that, tomorrow, I'm going to keep the door locked, so anyone who wants to come in has to ring the doorbell. Usually we leave the front door unlocked. But I can see myself being jumpy tomorrow. And better safe than sorry.

Sad it's come to this, huh?
