No spoilers - At least, I am assuming that we all know how it ends. (This is, after all, a political message board) If you don't, then don't read any further.

I was very young in 1968, not even in high school yet. So when I watched this it was not from a personal perspective of "reliving" the events, or the tragedy. Still, for some reason, and a total surprise to me, I was overwhelmed with emotion, as if I had personally attended the event in CA that day/night.

It was the last 20 minutes or so of the movie, at the point where he arrived at the hotel and gave his speech, that I started to well up with emotion. Then he said those famous words, "Let's go on to Chicago .....". You know what happens after that. I just busted out bawling, and didn't stop for the rest of the movie. How utterly tragic.

And, I think for me, it's because I understand the historical perspective now, even though I didn't at the time it happened. He represented hope at a time of war protests, equal rights battles, etc. MLK had recently been assassinated.

Perhaps it hit me so hard because I can compare it to what is going on today in politics. So much despair right now, especially within Democratic citizens. We can technically win the Presidential elections, only to have them stolen or overturned by a corrupt system. I wonder if the despair I feel now is analogous to the despair that was felt by the people in 1968.

Anyway, I hope many others here take the opportunity to see the movie. And I’d be interested to know if it affects other people the same way it did me.
