Oh frabjous day! I fixed my turntable today.
It had been on the fritz for a couple months. I fiddled with it, and finally managed to fix it wizard-of-oz-wise, using an oil can. Here are some of the albums we played tonight in drunken celebration:

Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream and Other Delights
ELO - A New World Record
Best of Petula Clark
20 hits of The Mama's and the Papas
Queen - Jazz
The Cars
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
A Trini Lopez live album
and, perhaps the queen of my vinyl collection
The Beatles - A Hard Days Night (United Artists)

2. what was wrong with it?
I have one that won't revolve. I have the original Going Quackers and Partners LPs that haven't been played for a long, long time.

4. While I can't say for 100% sure,
it seems the post on which the turtable rotated had become gummed up. I removed the center thing, down which the records slide, thus leaving a hole. I noticed there was a clip holding the turntable down, and pried it off. Then I removed the whole turntable by pulling it straight up. The "spindle" on which it rested, and the portion of the turntable that nested over that, were both gummy. So I cleaned them off, then applied motor oil from my oil can. I re-assembled the unit, and it worked!

8. My old record changer croaked
It would turn for a while, then slow down and stop for no reason. I got a new (to me) turntable at a garage sale for $5, and it works great. I've been playing the old vinyl and recording them to CD (and then to Ipod).

It's funny to hear the clicks and pops of well-worn vinyl coming from an ipod.
