Confess: Totally cheeser song you totally identify with
I'll go first.

Rocket Man by Elton John.

Especially after the last few months. I spent so much time on the road, and was recovering from the wedding flameout I've already covered in a couple too many maudlin posts. Combine that with 40,000 miles, hotels, strangers, and tons of public speaking where I had to have my game face on.

She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine a.m.
And I’m gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It’s lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it’s gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I’m a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

Your turn.

1. Check out my thread from earlier today, Will....
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=641379

I'm coming to terms with my inner Gouda....

Other than my newfound Dio worship, I gotta say that I totally identify with ZZ Top's "Tush," simply because I, too, am not asking for much. I, too....am just looking for some "tush."

2. Green Day, Time of Your Life
Another turning point;
a fork stuck in the road.

Time grabs you by the wrist;
directs you where to go.

So make the best of this test
and don't ask why.

It's not a question
but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs
and still frames in your mind.

Hang it on a shelf
In good health and good time.

Tattoos of memories
and dead skin on trial.

For what it's worth,
it was worth all the while.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

4. Nowhere Man: The Beatles
I think of *Bush every time I hear this song.

He's a real nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

Doesn't kave a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?
Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lends you a hand.

He's a real Nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

6. If You're gone
Matchbox 20

I think I've already lost you
I think you're already gone
I think I'm finally scared now
You think I'm weak - but I think you're wrong
I think you're already leaving
Feels like your hand is on the door
I thought this place was an empire
But now I'm relaxed - I can't be sure

I think you're so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm just scared - I think too much
I know this is wrong it's a problem I'm dealing

If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
'Cause there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I bet you're hard to get over
I bet the room just won't shine
I bet my hands I can stay here
I bet you need - more than you mind

I think you're so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm just scared - that I know too much
I can't relate and that's a problem I'm feeling

If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
'Cause there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you

I think you're so mean - I think we should try
I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm just scared - do I talk too much
I know this is wrong it's a problem I'm dealing

If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
'Cause there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you

8. It Don't Come Easy (sung by Ringo Starr)
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 11:26 PM by Skittles
I was 14, my dad was hospitalized for over a year following a suicide attempt (he eventually would succeed) and my mum couldn't handle all the kids and sent me to live with my alcoholic aunt and uncle. I thought that song was written for me.

It Don't Come Easy Lyrics

(It don't come easy, you know it don't come easy)
(It don't come easy, you know it don't come easy)

Got to pay your dues if you want to sing the blues
And you know it don't come easy
Now you don't have to shout or leap about
You can even take it easy
Forget about the past and all your sorrow
The future won't last
It will soon be your tomorrow

I don't want much, I only want for trust
And you know it don't come easy
And this love of mine keeps growing all the time
And you know it don't come easy
Open up your heart, let's come together
Use a little luck, and we will make it work out better

It don't come, oohh no, you know it don't come easy
It don't come, oohh no, you know it don't come easy

Got to pay your dues if you want to sing the blues
As you know it don't come easy
You don't have to shout or leap about
You can even take it easy
Please remember peace is what we make it
It's here within your reach, you are big enough to take it

I don't ask for much, I only want trust
You know it don't come easy
This love of mine is growing all the time
And you know it don't come easy

9. Whether it's "cheeser" depends on if you like Tool
but "Stinkfist" always says a lot to me - speaks to my attempts to bust out of my rut and fucking feel something.

Something has to change.
Un-deniable dilemma.
Boredom's not a burden
Anyone should bear.

Constant over stimu-lation numbs me
and I wouldn't have
It any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive.

Finger deep within the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Relax, turn around and take my hand.

I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure.
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way.

Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not have me any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive.

Knuckle deep inside the borderline.
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to.
Relax. Slip away.

Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging till
I feel something.

Elbow deep inside the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Shoulder deep within the borderline.
Relax. Turn around and take my hand.

20. Well, on the surface yes.
Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 12:35 AM by VelmaD
And we won't go into whether that has any meaning for me. Wouldn't want Skinner to lock the thread.

But there are also alternative interpretations. It's also about the effort to feel something through the numbness the world tries to wrap us all in. "Desensitized to everything...what became of sublety?"

Some people have also tried to tell me that it's about our consumption driven society and advertising and the way they try to shove products we don't need into every available orifice. Not sure I buy that one but, hey, whatever.

And on a very personal note, like I said, it speaks to my own efforts to force myself to feel something...anything. "I'll keep digging...til I feel something." More than that I'm uncomfortable sharing in public.

So yes, it's about fisting. :-)

10. Modern English - I melt with you
It' cheesy, it's from the 80's. Oh well, I still like it.

Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world thrashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you

(You should know better)
Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(You should see why)
Dropped in the state of imaginary grace
(You should know better)
I made a pilgrimage to save this humans race
(You should see why)
What I'm comprehending a race that long gone bye

(I'll stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you
(I'll stop the world) You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world) There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you
(Let's stop the world) I've seen some changes but it's getting better all the time
(Let's stop the world) There's nothing you and I won't do
(Let's stop the world) I'll stop the world and melt with you

The future's open wide

hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

I'll stop the world and melt with you (Let's stop the world)
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time (Let's stop the world)
There's nothing you and I won't do (Let's stop the world)
I'll stop the world and melt with you (Let's stop the world)
I'll stop the world and melt with you (Let's stop the world)
I'll stop the world and melt with you (Let's stop the world)

11. Not one, but TWO Corey Hart songs.
That's right, I said Corey Hart. Top that for cheesiness!

"Never Surrender"

Just a little more time is all we're asking for
Cause just a little more time could open closing doors
Just a little uncertainty can bring you down

And nobody wants to know you now
And nobody wants to show you how

So if you're lost and on your own
You can never surrender
And if your path won't lead you home
You can never surrender
And when the night is cold and dark
You can see, you can see light
Cause no one can take away your right
To fight and never surrender

"In Your Soul"

Ever since I was a little kid
I have always thought
I could run faster than the wind
Stare up to the sky with open spaces
I could live and die
Man you can't find that in no book
Never find that in no book
Someone will drag you down
And try to knock you under
Hey mama said with her words of wonder
Don't matter cause, cause it's in your soul

I have always felt
That I had to prove it to myself
No salvation from the firin' line
A million dreams won't set you free
God i know there's something trapped in me
There's no refuge from the ride
No shelter ever saved a man his pride
Give you pain and never feed your hunger
I won't close my eyes when it rain and thunders
Don't matter cause, cause it's in your soul

12. Yay!
I don't think this song is particualrly cheesy, but I've been informed that it in fact is, so here goes:

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out

Now - the mist across the window hides the lines
But nothing hides the colour of the lights that shine
Electricity so fine, look and dry your eyes.

We're - so tired of all the darkness in our lives
With no more angry words to say can come alive
Get into a car and drive to the other side.

Me babe - steppin' out
into the night
into the light.
You babe - steppin' out
into the night
into the light.

We - are young but getting old before our time.
We'll leave the T.V. and the radio behind.
Don't you wonder what we'll find
steppin' out tonight.

You - can dress in pink and blue
just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile.
We'll be there in just a while
if you follow me.

Me babe - steppin' out
into the night
into the light. . . .
Me babe - steppin' out
into the night
into the light. . ..

FWIW, I saw Joe Jackson live a few years ago, and left the theatre nearly crying with joy from his marvelousness. :)

That's one of the most overwhelmingly emotional songs ever written...I can't listen to it without tearing up. Then add Chris Bell's life story to the mix, and it's a song I can only hear once a month because it makes me so depressed....NOT CHEESER IN THE LEAST.

I'm only happy when it's complicated
And though I know you can't appreciate it

My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn't accidentally tell you that
I'm only happy when it rains

You'll get the message by the time I'm through
When I complain about me and you
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down on me Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down

its utterly butterly cheesy, with lyrics like:
I tell 'em what I like
What I won't
What I don't
But every time I do I stand corrected
Things that I've known
I can't believe what I hear about the world, I realize

hey but dont tell anyone!

26. More angry girl music...Poe this time
Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 12:56 AM by VelmaD
The person who posted "Only Happy When it Rains" reminded me about this song. (It's on my RealPlayer playlist right after Garbage.) I just adore Poe and this is her best angry-girl song. I love the line "Tell me something dangerous and true". When I'm having a day this song is like my manifesto to the male half of the specied.

I'm Not a Virgin Anymore

I'm not a virgin anymore
I just thought you should know
Darlin' I've been around
Yeah, I've been up and down your block
In fact I have been all over town
Down by the lake
And underneath the table in my living room
Outside by the blue blue moon

You can call me what you will
Call me a slut call me a jaded pill
But darlin I've got your number now

I'm not a virgin anymore
I've been taken
I've been hung up
I get down and start it over again
I've been open
And I've been closed like a book
And burned down like a written sin
I just thought you should know my darling
Before we begin
I'm not a virgin anymore

Just thought you should know
Before you let another lie
Slip through those crooked little teeth
I don't think you wanna start that shit with me

Much better yet
Tell me something dangerous and true
Oh yeah that looks much sexier on you

Careful what it is you say
'Cause I can see right through you
On a cloudy day and darlin' I think you wanna play
I'm not a virgin anymore
I've been taken
I've been hung up
I get down and start it over again
I've been open
And I've been closed like a book
And burned down like a written sin
So if you wanna play dirty my darling I'm gonna win
I'm not a virgin anymore

Been there done that
(Say what?)
Get the hang of it
Get screwed
I screw you I had a whole lot of fun with it
I've had enough now so you better take a bow
It's gonna be a new experience if you wanna play with me

Daisy chains and maryjanes
Happy ending fairy tales
Cannot fool me now

I've been taken
I've been hung up
I get down and start it over again
I've been open
And I've been closed like a book
And burned down like a written sin

Hell I've been divided
Out of my mind and reinvented again
I've been ignited and then uninvited
So honey
You break it up
I'm gonna put it back together again

I just thought you should know my darling
Before we begin

I'm not a virgin anymore

27. Eye of the Tiger, by Survivor
From one of my favorite films, Rocky III. The song and the film just have a great message: you can never get lazy or complacent.

It's One of Those Nights by The Partridge Family

Simply a song which makes me think of a girl I should never have let go almost 20 years ago and listen to sometimes when I look at old pictures of her. Sigh....

Well I won't back down
No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down

No I'll stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin me down
gonna stand my ground
... and I won't back down

37. My cheesy song and why I refuse to turn on any "lite" rock stations
Don't listen to "lite rock" or "soft rock" if you have relationship problems or every damn song you hear will f*ck with your head. Forget the cheesy stuff alltogether. Find some classic rock and roll, jazz, classical, or something else.

It's Too Late
by Carol King

Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time
There's something wrong here
There can be no denying
One of us is changing
Or maybe we've just stopped trying

And it's too late baby
Now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide
And I just can't fake it
Wo no no no...

It used to be so easy living here with you
You were light and breezy
And I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy
And I feel like a fool

And it's too late baby
Now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

There'll be a time just for me and you
But we just can't stay together
Don't you feel it too
Still I'm glad for what we had
And how I once loved you

And it's too late baby
Now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

Too late, baby, it's too late
Darling, it's too late

39. Learning to Fly
by Tom Petty. Also love "Won't Back Down" and "Running Down A Dream". Some good ones mentioned besides TP, Garbage, Green Day, and Joe Jackson.

For me it's about being sad in the moment and realizing that you can still be free and learn to find other skies, so to speak.

Learning to Fly

Well I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone

And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
The town lit up the world got still

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Comin' down is the hardest thing

Well the good old days may not return
And the rocks might melt, and the sea may burn

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Comin' down is the hardest thing

Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I started out for God kno ws where
But I guess I'll know when I get there

I'm learning to fly around the clouds
But what goes up must come down

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Comin' down is the hardest thing
I'm learning to fly around the clouds
But what goes up must come down

I'm learning to fly
I'm learning to fly

40. Don't Give Up by Peter Gabriel
Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 02:20 PM by myrna minx
Don't Give Up Lyrics

in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground

don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing

moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs

don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up
'cause I believe there's the a place
there's a place where we belong

This song makes me cry every time. *I* don't think its a cheeser, but I am sure many would. I looooovvvve this song.

42. NOTHING CHEESER ABOUT THIS!
This song helped keep me from doing the "big checkout" some years back, and the bridge in the song:

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing-

for some reason gives me goosbumps

43. Read the end of my post...
I don't think it is cheeser, either. This song has ushered me through the darkest times in my life. Some folks, however, roll their eyes (people I know) whenever I wax poetic about this song. I love this song.

45. "A-E-I-O-U Sometimes Y" by EBN-OZN
Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore....
I was walking up Broadway you know
and there's this incredible looking Swedish girl having a
Cappuccino across the street from Lincoln Center, I started
talking to her you know - She said her name was Lola,
Her English wasn't too good you know - but we wound up spending
about 5 hours together just hanging out you know.
So We go back to my place - we get high - we get really into each other man.
It was love about to happen...I'm serious.
And then all of a sudden she gets up and she says, she says "Hey, I really gotta leave"
Damn
A E I O U Sometimes Y
There are 178 parent languages on our planet with over 1000 dialects...
It's amazing we communicate at all.
Languages and dialects - with this one thing in common:
A E I O U Sometimes Y
Ahhh!
A E I O U A E I O U A E I O U A E I O U
Sometimes Y!!
But you know I was really flipped out you know and she asked me
if I'm angry or something I said of course I'm angry man this
isn't high school or anything you know so I'm feeling really
cavalier and I say ah...call me if you want to...
huh, yeah...call me if you want to
So she rang me up and she says, "Hey! Do you wanna go out?"
Huh, Do I wanna go out
A E I O U Sometimes Y
A E I O U Sometimes Y
Operator! Operator! What's happening operator?!
Mommy? Mommy Mommy!! Where are you
Mommy? I can't see you
I can't see you Mommy!
All artists, potentially, are the victims of their desire to be unique
Just observe it
Don't fight it
Work it. Work it. Work it. Work it. Work it.
Yeah she took me home man she threw me all
around the room man
I mean this chick was really hot she was nice
to me you know
She let me keep on my cowboy boots and everything...she was
Allright... oh! oh! yeah! oh! oh! oh! oh! ohhhhhh!!!
I dare you to play this record
A E I O U Sometimes Y
A E I O U Sometimes Y
Anyway so she took me home and she
splattered my brains
Yeah there I am there I am what happened what happened
Where was I oh here I am
I told her I wouldn't sleep with her friends - she
Doesn't sleep with my friends Anything else you do
You know...Don't you tell me

47. "Rocket Man" is not a cheeser...
Rolling Stones, "You can't always get what you want..." is not a cheeser. (That was my personal anthem after I hit the "eject" button on a relationship... I didn't graduate to "Rocket Man" until after I'd wandered through a few other empty wastelands.)

My nomination: "Knowing me, knowing you," by abba. It speaks of empty places, so there you go Will. Even though I have no musical taste, and therefore LOVE abba, I acknowledge that most people don't. The song is a cheeser.

There are two parts here: Her and (Him.)

Mem’ries (mem’ries), good days (good days), bad days (bad days)
They’ll be (they’ll be), with me (with me) always (always)
In these old familiar rooms children would play
Now there’s only emptiness, nothing to say

Oh yeah, anyone who thinks I was cruel to Will in that other thread, or in this one, well, the one horrible time I was forced to hit the "eject button" on a relationship, she hit her button first, while I was still thinking we could land the damned plane. I'd been flying with someone who reminds me very much of Mr. William Pitt.

You see, she wrote this book...
