Your favorite suspension bridge?
I love 'em all, they're such amazing feats of engineering, but if I hadda pick one, it'd be the Golden Gate.

The perfect match of bridge and its setting.

1. The Golden Gate
with the Brooklyn Bridge a close second. I have a reproduction of an architect's elevation of it hanging in my living room. MagNIFicent architecture.

The Golden Gate wins for its setting and its sheer majesty.

I love bridges, man. :7

is my favorite too. Maybe b/c it's the only suspension bridge (of any length) that I've been on.

40. My family used to cross it every years when I was a kid
to visit relatives; the first few years it was always in the middle of a windstorm or rain, which freaked me out to no end:) When I grew up I realized just how beaautiful the bridge (and the drive back and forth across it) was..

44. When it swings in the wind?
The first time I ever drove across it myself (as opposed to being a passenger) was a really windy day; I should've guessed since the bridge patrol were stopping busses, trucks, and campers so they could lead them over, but they waved me on. The center of the bridge was swaying in the wind; very scary. I just kept looking straight ahead and made it over. Whew!

5. Not sure if this counts...
Mariansky bridge in the Czech Republic. I took the train by it a few years ago and thought it looked cool.

I had to use Google Earth and follow the river out of Dresden to find the name of the bridge.

49. Technically, that is a cable-stayed bridge
a newer style that seems to be supplanting the classic suspension bridge.

The principle has been known for quite some time, but the intricate calculations required to know exactly where to place the cables were impractical before the advent of high-speed computers.

20. That's a different bridge.
What you're referring to (I think) is the bridge/tunnel connecting the Virginia Eastern Shore to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area.

The photo is the Bay Bridge east of Annapolis. I've driven across this at least 100 times and it still scares me every time. One lane has grating...I don't like the idea of being 300 feet up in the air driving fast, then look at the lane in front of me and see the water WAY down there! :scared:

The first weekend in May they usually close one of the spans for several hours so people can walk across it. I'm too scared/afraid of heights to try...but I still want to give it a shot sometime.

35. I like the three sisters here in Pittsburgh
Three nearly identical eyebar (rather than cables) suspension bridges right in a row, I just love them!

You can see them lined up here

Eyebar details

I also like The Smithfield Street bridge, which is a lenticular truss bridge rather suspension. It was designed by Gustav Lindenthal, later the New York City commissioner of bridges (built the Queensboro bridge).

I love bridges!

in it, and after much intrigue & odd doings with excommunicated masons, he has a contact point the pro-tag is to meet up in that area of the Pacific NW...oh, his name? why of course: Tacoma Narrows

i've edited his stuff now for some time, yay! though it can be a daunting process at best x( when i'll need to see things quite literally as he does; and though i had seen that vid elsewhere, still it was suggested that i view it from the perspective of failed masonic principles and viola!

And the first steel-wire suspension bridge - It's simply beautiful in design, with a great story behind it. Along with the Golden Gate, each is a standard film icon to establish setting in their cities.

An image from better days...
