I find the Progresso soup commercial highly offensive
Man gets out can of condensed soup, and his wife says,"The kids are gone, now we can eat the good stuff(paraphrased).

First of all, it reinforces the archaic notion that men have no clue in the kitchen.

Second of all, it says, "we fed the kids crap, now we can eat like kings".

I'm sick of sitcoms and commercials depicting men as simpletons who can barely get themselves through the day without a female to point out all their (obvious) failings.

2. I agree!
The men look stupid and the kids have been neglected. Although, I must say, that soup is not that great. But just look at the car and beer ads...we are really regressing!

I like books and DVDs, too. ;)

5. You're right, it seems like most commercials
portray the men as childish idiots and the woman as prim, superior know-it-alls. I always wonder why they portray these couples like that. I don't know people that act like these characters.

6. Not all Progresso ads use these gender roles
For example, there's one with two female roommates.

But all of them have one character ridiculing another for having childish tastes in food. I find the ads loathsome, though the soup's not bad (for canned).

7. Their soup has no flavor
I'm not big on canned soup, but I do think Campbell's actually tastes better.

8. Neither is very good, and both are filled with ridiculous amounts of salt.
But I'd still take Progresso over Campbell's, any day, though we don't purchase either brand for our home.

9. Hey, I find Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup comfort food...
We were given it as children when we were sick, and we'd feed it to each other when we were feeling crappy here in the dorms. Progresso sucks...I'd much rather go for some Campbell's chunky soup or something than that wannabe CRAP.

No offense taken by this man, and I do most of the cooking in our house. As far as the kids go, remember that some families can't afford the "good stuff" while they're supporting X number of mouths. Parents often have more expendable income when the kids leave (as long as they actually leave), thus I'm not offended by that part of the commercial. Nevermind that almost everything marketed to kids has no taste, thus marketing something to "parents" intimates that it has more flavor.

It's just a dumb commercial. One among thousands.
