Useless now, that useless were;
the red strip trapped in clear cellophane
tugged free from the soft cardboard packet,
lays with the ashes of the first victim
by burning this evening,
a filter tops the cremains
of a bad habit, still living--
near-to-hand, the obtuse angle,
gray-side up and rippled metal,
of a discarded cap that once dammed
the golden fluid of another damnable
obsession. And also notebook pages,
lines struck and words blotted, and
doodles drawn in margins--useless, and perhaps
the worst discards of
the worst habit that ever was--
crumpled and settled in a wastebin
above a number of condom-wrappers.
Thus, from passions and pleasures,
so much without use--
all with their purpose...once.
