If you could add any room to your home, what would it be?
If someone came along and offered to pay 100% of the cost to add a room to your home, including the cost of furnishing and decorating, what would you choose? What would it look like? What would be in your room?

Mine would be a library--beautiful rich wood panelling on the walls, hardwood floors with a couple of big thick woven rugs to damp down the echo, a couple of big bay windows with soft, wide, thick-cushioned window seats for snuggling up with a book. The walls would be lined ceiling to floor with beautiful rich mahogany shelves, full of antique books and leatherbound hardcovers, and there would be lovely stuffed leather armchairs big enough to curl up and fall asleep in, with an ambient stereo system built into the walls to play CDs full of the sounds of the ocean, falling rain, and thunder.

2. Honestly...a panic room.
I'd walk in with my laptop, DVD case, and cell phone and hit the button. Goodbye Cruel World...I'll be back when I'm not sick of RL.

4. a sauna and/or pool room
with a hot tub, of course. I like your library idea though, but the steam would ruin the books.

Or maybe a music studio. Yeah, that would be cool too.

7. Oooh a library
That'd be a great one. I have a zillion books and noplace to put them. Plus I loves me a window seat!

But for the house we're in now, I'd have to say some sort of addition onto the kitchen plus a back porch (is that two?)--mainly because the kitchen is at the back of the house and the back wall is solid--not even a window (there's some brick with a mantel and a pipe for a woodstove), so I can't get south sunlight and I can't see the back yard. That's a special bummer with the toddler--can't throw him out into the back yard without going out there with him.

Perhaps a "breakfast room" more than a "Florida room"--a lovely big bay window/series of windows on a curve and/or French doors, with a small table and such.

Mmm...sunlight...

14. Well, my landlord wouldn't want me adding onto his building, but...
I'd like to have a screened-in porch or deck with a chaise lounge, a hammock, and lighting, so that I could read outside on late summer evening without being bothered by mosquitos--or even sleep outside without having to use the air conditioner.

16. A library
Built-in shelves for my books, a comfortable chair or two, a big desk, a fireplace and a big window. It would have hardwood floors and some warm, comfortable rugs.

And a coffee maker and a door that locks. With a 'do not disturb' sign.

20. A big screened-in porch.
My whole house is basically my library, with shelves and a comfy place to read in nearly every room.

A big screened in porch with a comfy chair for reading and watching the birds and listening to the leaves rustle on the trees and catching a good breeze--that would be sweet! Or sitting out there at night with a cup of tea and relaxing. Heaven.

22. A sun room. One where I could sit and enjoy sunshine on a cold
winter day without having to get out in it. I really miss being outside during cold weather, but I just can't put on enough clothes to be comfortable sitting outside when the temperature drops below 50.

25. I'm leaving this house, but the room I've always wanted
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 11:42 AM by crim son
but never had is a solarium - a sunroom/greenhouse type room, heated in winter. Here in Maine it would be heaven to be able to sit among green plants in mid-winter. Or now, for that matter.

Edited to add: it would be a Victorian-style room with arched windows and marble surfaces.

34. Easy one! An artist's studio.
I have no where to do my art work, except the kitchen table. I would love a big room with long tables, lots of natural light, a big deep sink, tons of cabinets, the works. It doesn't have to be fancy, just functional.
