Some Easter musings from Bill Hicks...
I’ve been traveling a lot lately. I was over in Australia during Easter. It was interesting to note they celebrate Easter the same way we do; commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus by telling our children a giant bunny rabbit left chocolate eggs in the night.

Now, I wonder why we’re fucked up as a race.

You know, I’ve read the Bible. I can’t find the words ‘bunny’ or ‘chocolate’ anywhere in the fucking book. Where do you come up with this shit?

Why those two things? Why not ‘Goldfish left Lincoln Logs in your sock drawer’? As long as we’re making shit up, go hog wild. At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back crawling across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

“Mummy, today I found a Lincoln log in me sock drawer.”

“That’s the story of Jesus.”

:)

1. Serious answer?
Because virtually every christian holiday has usurped imagery and tradition from pagan celebrations that preceded them. There are several reasons for this but one of them is because christianity sought to stamp out other belief systems and by allowing people to keep some of the more harmless traditions of their former religion, they eased the transition enough to make it less contentious.

That's why we have Maypoles and Easter bunnies and Christmas trees and Halloween, among other things.

3. The main Easter message in Australia, for as long as
I can remember, has been:-
"DRIVE SAFELY".
All that religious stuff is only for the few gullibles left.
Bunnies and eggs, could be fertility, ya think?
