What's the hardest tune to get out of your head?
I once had the theme to MacGyver running through my head for about 6 months, helped along by my brother who would leave me voicemails with his own rendition of the demonic song (DUN, dun dun DUN, dun dun DUN da da da dun DUN dun). I still owe him for that...

I'm currently struggling to exorcise Particle Man by They Might Be Giants. I'm hoping it has a short shelf-life.

So what's your best (worst) example of a pernicious earworm?

1. So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night....
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight.....

There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say "cuckoo"

Cuckoo Cuckoo

Regretfully they tell us Cuckoo, cuckoo
But firmly they compel us Cuckoo, cuckoo
To say goodbye . . .

Goodbye,

goodbye

42. Oh, man, I had that song last week and finally laid it to rest.
Now it's back. I HATE that song.

So I will raise you a . . .

This is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on, my friend.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was.
And they'll continue singing it forever, just because
this is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on, my friend, etc., ad infinitum.

2. Lately?
U2's "Beautiful Day". So much so that I was seriously considering getting back on the meds last week.

I have a phonographic memory, so at least the earworms are precise and accurate, but it's not good for my general sanity. :(

4. This is kind of sad--but the Alanis Morisette parody
of "My Humps" has been stuck in my head. For a joke song, the melody is really pretty and catchy, and it's just stuck on high rotation in my head right now.

26. Sad when MacGyver seems a tame earwig
But I would venture to guess that there are many mid-seventy songs that would be much worse.

22. Oh, how to choose?
I get some brutal ones.

The theme song to "Barbapapa" drives me nuts. Even worse, no one in this area has ever heard of that cartoon, so they all think I'm delusional.

Also the theme song to Wallace and Gromit. My in-laws gave me an alarm clock that plays the song.

I'll also include "Loving You" by Minnie Riperton, just so that others can share the joy.

41. I get the chorus to Living Next Door to Alice by Dr. Hook
stuck there for days at a time. Don't know why, it just pops into my head and takes up residence for a few days, then it leaves again.

Oh I don't why she's leaving or were she's gonna go
I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't wanna know
Cause for 24 years I've been living next door to Alice
(ALICE, WHO THE FUCK IS ALICE)
24 years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel and maybe get a second glance
Now I gotta get used to not living next door to Alice
(ALICE, WHO THE FUCK IS ALICE)
