Your first car
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 08:40 PM by ZombyWoof
Mine was purchased in 1984 in high school... a '78 Toyota Corolla station wagon. It was good for hauling my guitars, my amp, and various friends' keyboards and drums. Got me across the country too. I have always been utilitarian about cars. :-)

Yours?

2. Bought from my parents (a trend in my life): a 1980 Datsun 210 Hatchback.
Purchased in 1984; retired in 1989. It was still running good, but little things were starting to break down. So, I ditched it and got another car from my parents, a 1984 Subaru Station Wagon.

7. Mine was retired and sold to a neighbor in '92
Funny thing is I last saw it in 2002, being driven by someone else. I knew it was mine by the faded red paint and the dent on the passenger side front fender - from where I slid into a light pole on ice during a bad winter storm in 1989. :-) That was one tough car, if it lasted 24 years or more.

I sold it to a woman that worked with my dad. She was still driving it at last report, so it's 23 years old now. Subarus are built like tanks.

1975 Vega coupe....burned more oil than gas.

I remember climbing a hill once and slipping the clutch to provide an extra "gearing" to be able to pull it.

Back when they had the cool little dragon emblem.

got me to and from school, until it started having some minor troubles. Then I opted to share my sister's 1984 Bronco II and do a complete overhaul of the Celica. I got it torn down, but time never allowed me to build it up again, and I sold it in pieces to a junkyard.

74. My '66 had a 'Glide
I took off a linkage rod and turned it into a shifter. I was a hot-rod kid and that 2,200-RPM upshift didn't cut it.

You could wind a 'Glide way past the torque curve. It and the Mopar 727 Torqueflite were probably the toughest American automatics ever mass-produced.

My truck has one too, but I let it shift itself.

My second car. 1962 Rambler Ambassador. At the time, my commute to work was a 60 miles round trip. I burned 6 (SIX) quarts of oil each trip! I bought used bulk oil for $.10 a quart. I think I was visible from outer space.

30. My First Car was a Truck

My First Car Was A Truck

At 16, a gift (?) from my dad. A Ford.
Model year: 1960. Body style: F-100.
Originally from Tennessee. A bootlegger's wheels.
Painted with green housepaint, applied with a roller.
Ugly. Distinctive. Beautiful. Mine.
No seat. No muffler. No brakes. No Problem.
Missing two windows and one door.
Weld some new steel. Add some bondo. Paint it black.
New interior. New tires. New stereo. Tune it up. Cruise.

Weekends: pick up Anita (14, tall, blond, built for speed).
Stop at Foremost for a fifth of Southern Comfort.
Hanging out at the 7-11, necking on the tailgate.
Way Cool. Still Young. Drunk with love.

Do you know Paul?
No.
Yeah, you know, the guy with the old truck?
With the Blond?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah I know him.

That truck was something.
I was somebody.
I sold it to buy a guitar.

********************

Along with the guitar, I bought one of these too: 1965 Impala Super Sport

42. '88 Dodge Caravan
It looked something like this...

I drove it my first year that I could drive, but it was twelve years old at the time and on its last legs. It had some quirky things about it that I had to get used to, but I actually had a lot of fun driving it, and took a weird sort of pride in driving the old minivan I'd been riding in since I was five years old. It's the only vehicle I've ever felt sentimental feelings about getting rid of.

Plus, I think it's good for a sixteen year old driver to have a vehicle that it won't be that big of a deal if they screw something up in it. At least in my case, my first couple of years of driving were when I was getting most of the stupidness, driving-wise, out of my system (I know this varies to a large degree from driver to driver!) so it's better to do something stupid in an old run-down minivan worth less than $1,000, than in a brand new car.

66. yep!
My dad had a '56 Ford Country Sedan station wagon

when I was a teenager I could identify every Ford, Chevy, and Dodge by year from 49 thru 65

damn I wish I had my '54 back! I got $300 for it as trade-in on a '63 Chevy Bel Air.
I wish I had THAT back too. I gave it to someone to use in demolition derby.

54. 1969 Chevy Nova, bought in '93
Had 60K miles on it, needed paint but went 102mph without blinking. We partially rebuilt the engine and painted it the original Chevy orange. Good first car, heavily armored. :D

I took it to a garage once - can't remember why - and the kid who saw it first said "We'll hook it up to the computer and find out what's wrong with it in no time". Before I could stop laughing, one of the oldtimer mechanics came by and explained to the kid that cars with computers were a somewhat recent development.

Then the oldtimer helped the kid fix my car.

No I cannot find a picture of one anywhere. That should tell you how cool it was. No heat (in norhtern Michigna that meant BRRRRRRRRRRR) and no one could tell me why. No mechanic wanted to work on it. Always blew fuses. But you know, it was my first taste of freedom in some ways, being able to come and go as I could, well as much as I could in high school. And my second car totally kicked ass so it makes up for it.

Pretty much same color as this one, although I never took it to Niagara Falls. Bought it in 1965 from a Navy buddy, but only had it for a year or two until I bought a 1966 VW bug, new, to save on gas. The Impala was a real nice car.

We called it the tank because if anyone couldn't get around they would call me and I would come and pick them up. They called off school one time in all my years and we rode around town all day banging through snow drifts.
It only had 23,000 miles on it in 1980 when it was "Stolen" from the junkyard we had it towed to after an accident while we waited access having it fixed.

68. My great aunt gave me and my sister her 1973 Plymouth Fury III to use at college.
:bounce: :toast: We got the car in late 1983, when she decided at age 91 that she couldn't drive any more. It got about six miles to the gallon and was metallic pea green with a green vinyl top. She was the proverbial little old lady that only drove the car to church on Sundays, so it only had 17,000 miles on it. However, she apparently gunned the engine and used it as a race car to church because the motor mounts were broken when we got it. :yoiks: It was big as a whale and was about to set sail... :P We drove it until it fell apart---I got my first purchased new car in 1987 (a Mazda 323), but my sister drove the Fury until it died in 1994. :D

it was a 4 door sedan piss yellow and wasn't my first choice for a car. My mom was helping me by cosigning the loan so she nixed the car I wanted, a 1972 Mustang just like this

The girls I took out on dates thought I was Ward Cleaver. I lost reverse on the tranny in 1981 soI spent $500 to fix the exhaust and a rebuild transmission. The next week I lost control in a snow storm and hit a pole sideways. I was able to drive it to work where it sat until a chief bought it for $50. He wanted it for the transmission and doors etc. He sent it to out to the training center for storage. A month later the rescue squad was out there doing some training and they set it on fire.

83. Yea, except that's a 1970 stang shown...
The 1972 was a totally different bodystyle. It was bigger and squarer in the front and back. It was also smogged way down. Performance was in the crapper compared to the 1970 shown.

Not only that, but you are showing a "Boss 302" fastback. It was a high HP model that had a large smallblock designed specfically for that car....Plus the one shown in original condition is worth between $50,000-$80,000 right now.

You can buy a decent 1972 for probably $5K

Not even in the same league.

It was also the year I got my first newspaper internship, and my mom was driving me to work in her Ford LTD one afternoon after school. We passed my dad coming from the opposite direction, and he honked and waved wildly. Mom pulled over and dad pulled up behind us in the Celica and reached through the passenger-side window to hand me the keys to the car he was driving: a year-old, silver, two-door Toyota Celica. I got out of the car, he got into the passenger seat, and I drove to work in my first car. :)

85. 1990 Toyota Camry
Bought new.

I loved it.

White, but not the V6.

Loved the second Camry, too, a 1998.

For me, cars are primarily a practical necessity (I never got into them as a kid and I never had one 'til after I got married -- all motorcycles before then) and I figure that if I want high performance I'll take my motorcycle out, because only a few $250000-plus sport cars have been built that are street-legal can approach its acceleration, anyway.

I've got a Mercedes now but the Japanese stars (Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima, etc) still dominate the list of cars I'd buy.

To go with the Elvis thing, though, I have to admit that I'd love to get hold of a mid-'70s Cadillac Fleetwood or the like (the older ones are cool, too, but the mid-'70s ones were ridiculously plush, like riding around in a Lazyboy, and they not only fit with the period I'm trapped in but are available from little old ladies who hardly drove them whereas the older Cadillacs in good shape tend to be restored and big money).

I also wouldn't turn down a Lamborghini, or similar, but I'd sure hate to pay for its keep.

I'd definitely buy another Mercedes, in a heartbeat.

We loves our cars!

My first car was a 1964 VW Bug. (It was 10 years old when I bought it for $500.) Chocolate brown, named 'er Cocoa Puff. 6 volt battery -- the headlights were almost worthless... Used to drive that car from Santa Cruz to Tahoe every few months and coming up some of the mountain roads I'd have to go into 1st gear! LOL!! :/ But it took me all over the country and I loved that little car! When I lived in Montana, I had to put a little heater underneath it at night in the winter so the oil wouldn't freeze. Well I've never heard of that before or since so don't really know if it was true -- but we did it. The locals were probably laughing their asses off at us! LOL!!

there is a reason for this. I've never passed the driving test. Not even close. It's not a matter of driving, it's a matter of spacial disorientation. I can't drive with my mirrors...so I rarely look at them...so I fail. The one time I had the test passed, I was backing into the parking space and I hit the curb. Automatic fail. The test administrator asked me if I hit the curb and like an idiot...I said "yes".

at that time, the Gremlin came with more engine options than any other car. You could get anything from an in-line 4 cylinder all the way up to a V-8. And a V-8 in that little thing could really move!

and it came in such great colors, like lemon yellow, purple, and pastel pink.
