Anyone else color their hair every 2/5 weeks?
I starting going gray at 30 and back then I thought it was kind of cool. Now within 2 weeks of coloring my hair I have a gray stripe growing out at my roots......every time. So as I wait here the obligatory 45 minutes for the color to take I figured I'd check in and see if I am the only one with this luxury problem.

I wonder how much brownish red coloring I have in my brain. I wonder what color my brain is period.

(I have always had a fear of being arrested and going to trial after being held in a cell for several months. I've seen this happen to people....last one was that actor guy who was charged with shooting his wife. He went in with drown hair and came out with gray. And some of those black widows turn into gray widows after a stint in the big house)

Oh the horror!

2. If you get a powder makeup that is like the color of your hair you can dust it on
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 03:38 PM by Maraya1969
between touch ups. Mine is auburn color so I use a dark blush and tap the powder into the roots with a brush. It works fairly well.

EDIT: because powder has a "d" in it.

i use Aveda color conserve shampoo and that seems to help keep the color looking better longer except the roots of course.

Not sure if this is the one you're talking about -- but the line of shampoo and conditioner that includes madder root, clove, blue malva, etc.

Two weeks is actually 336 hours.

And 2/5 of a week is 67 hours, 12 minutes.

Any other math you would like us to cover?

8. Every 2-4 weeks
for me too but I've found a better solution just recently.

I put permanent highlights and dark tones in my hair (on a permanent base color) two to three times a year. I use semipermanent color on the roots every 2-4 weeks in between. There is never a stripe because the color fades over 6 weeks and blends with both the permanent highlights and the natural gray as it does. Worst, when I try to go 4 weeks, I look like I have blond highlights around the temples where my hair is actually pure white at this point.

Semi permanent dies only take 5 - 10 minutes max, and there is little or no burning.

27. Does the semi-permanent last until your next full color thingy and if you get
the semi permanent on the highlights does it ruin them?

I have highlights to try and hide the root problem also. I seem to only be able to add my root touch up a few times before I have covered over the highlights.

32. No. I use the semi permanent every 2-4 weeks
Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 10:19 PM by dancingAlone
right on top of the permanent color. It begins to wash out and fade immediately but isn't noticeable right away. It is supposed to last 4 to 6 weeks depending on how often you wash your hair and if there are other exposures (sun light...).

I use a permanent base color that is close to my original color and have permanent highlights (as you do) to help blend with the natural gray at the root. I also add permanent tones darker than the base color (applied like highlights) for depth and to help with blending.

When I use the semi permanent color I pick a color close to my permanent base color. I have found that darker rather than lighter shades work best. I apply it to the roots and leave it for 5 minutes. Then I apply what's left in the bottle to the rest of my hair for 5 more minutes. That's it.

You can see the lighter and darker highlights though the color because it doesn't actually alter the hair color, it just coats the hair strands, and is only left on for a total of 5 minutes. The roots blend in perfectly with the base colors, same principle, the color coats the hair strand but has been left on 5 minutes longer so it is darker with the gray strands naturally a little lighter, making it look like natural highlights.

I break the rules and use shampoo in the first 24 hours which washes out just enough color to let the highlights show through a little better.

After that every shampoo washes out a little more color, but that serves to brighten the highlights, if you will. The gray hair does the same, gradually looking like a lighter and lighter shade of the base color, never actually looking like gray hair. (I reapply the semi permanent color before it has a chance to. Every 3 - 4 weeks.)

I haven't had the dreaded "stripe" since I started doing this. I mean I have it but it doesn't show. And it never feels like a big deal to color my hair any more. I can throw in the color 10 minutes before showering without worrying. If it looks too dark or I've missed a spot, a little extra shampoo will blend it out. I'll have permanent color done when the roots are an inch or more long. I'm actually thinking I must be due for that about now but honestly I haven't noticed the line in so long I'll have to take a closer look.

The most important consideration is the color you choose to use on top of the permanent colors. (I made the mistake of using an ash brown/black on golden blond highlights once, many years ago, and it came out green.) You have to make sure that your colors have the same or compatible base colors. The bottles will say what the base color is. Just use common sense. A blue based tint over yellow/gold makes green. Most base colors are pretty compatible with each other though, tints being pretty subtle in the first place, unless of course you make green. Which just ain't natural!

38. Semi-Permanent color?
Perhaps you mean temporary color?

I'll start by confusing you. Semi-permanent color is in fact, permanent.

What you are referring to is temporary color. Temporary color coats the hair cuticle and slides off after several washings.

Semi-permanent color is a mixture of (usually) an aniline-derivative tint, mixed with a %10 peroxide solution. The low level peroxide is strong enough to open the cuticle to accept the tint, but not strong enough to strip the hair of all pigment before deposting tint.

Permanent color is an aniline-derivative tint mixed with %20 peroxide. In most cases, this mixture is strong enough to remove all natural pigment and replace it with the tint in the mixture. The process is referred to as "permanent" because once you strip the hair of its natural pigment, you can't put it back.

Just sticking my ex-hairdresser nose in. :)

And even "temporary" hair color can be permanent if the hair is of a certain porousity.

13. Yes.
You can buy the touch-up kits but they cost just about as much as a whole application, so I just do my roots every three or four weeks and comb it through at the end to recover any fading areas. Sigh. I never thought it would bother me this much, to have even my hair get old!

15. Yes, and No- I couldn't stand the dyeing anymore.
So I started to use Loving Care in blonde -- it tints any grays blonde, and since my hair is
fairly light, it just looks like I have more blonde highlights.

The problem is you have to do it quite often, as there is no deposit, so it rinses out pretty fast.

17. I was born blonde, and I want to die blonde!
Though I just let my hair grow out to its 'natural' color not long ago -- a very dingy, ashy, dark blonde/light brown with gray strands throughout. I don't really mind it, esp. if I get highlights around my face so I don't look do damn tired if I don't get 8hours sleep every night, but think I might go back to dyeing/bleaching my hair a light blonde this summer. I have a picture of me when I was probably 4-5, and it was this light, shining blonde - wish I could easily go back to that. Sigh. Hate dealing with the roots, though - they look so dark coming in!

20. I do but I
really want to stop. My original color is a dark brunette but about 15 years ago when I started getting a little gray, I started coloring it a medium auburn. Now I have lots of gray at my temples and the color comes out almost pink there now at first because it's so white!

I'm going to start working my way back to my original color so I don't have to cut it all off and eventually stop altogether. Gonna let my freak flag fly, I guess! LOL

42. About the pink temples:
You need to mix colors. You would have to get a neutral/natural color at the same level as the auburn your using. You would mix half and half. You wouldn't need to put twice as much dye on your hair. Just mix half of one color, half of the other and then one of the bottles of developer. You would then have enough left over for the next time as long as it's not all mixed. That way it's no more expensive than it is now.

33. I get it done at a salon and they say every 6 weeks, but
I've been getting more and more gray as I get older and now the gray roots seem to start showing by four weeks. I'm in the process of looking for a job now, so I can't afford to go more frequently at this time. It's hard to afford this as it is. So I end up with a lovely gray stripe for a couple of weeks. I wear my hair curly so sometimes I can make it messy enough on top to hide the roots somewhat, but it still sucks.

In my family you go gray very early or very late.

My sister and brother had gray hair in their 20's.

39. Yeah -- dye it black for the job

Miss Clairol 51D Black Velvet, same as Elvis.

I have come to like how it looks, but I don't like having to dye it, and especially as often as I need to. Mascara can cover the roots at sideburns and temples for quite a while (my sideburns need to be touched up with mascara within two days of dying...it thickens them up, anyway) but it inevitably has to be dyed again way sooner than I usually expect. I can get away with a touch-up job (just using one ounce each of developer and dye) but I have discovered that if I don't regularly throw in a complete dye job (two ounces of each liquid in the mix) the roots in the back start to show when my hair moves, as when there's wind (sort of how a cat's fur parts to reveal subsurface color).

I don't like dying my hair but I'm stuck with it. Henna/indigo is not a practical option.

40. Yup - My Hair Grows Fast
My color doesn't fade - my hair grows very fast. I started going white when I was 12, and I mean WHITE. The most I can stand to let it go is 5 weeks, but rarely - the white hair with the ones that are still dark against my white scalp makes it look as though my hair is thinning badly, which is worse for my vanity than having 80% white hair at my age!

43. Bumble and Bumble spray powder.

It sprays on and washed out. If your hair is a very dark brown us the brown. If your hair is in the dark blond to medium brown range use the blonde. Light blonde would use the white. If your hair is more on the red than brown side you would use the red.

I have used it when I was too busy to do a root retouch. It covers good and can get you through a few more weeks. It good for getting you through that week before a retouch too if your roots and hair color a very different.

My color holds up pretty well as long as I don't have to blow it out every day. That seems to make it fade faster.
