Uh oh. Advice please.
At work, we got a list of names from a recent convention. People who wanted to be contacted about our products and services. So, I created a mailing and set up mailing lists (email, that is). However, we're using a new program at work, and though I *told* it to bcc, and it showed up with the addresses bcc, all of the addresses in each group showed up to everyone else on the mailing. Now, these people are hardly likely to use these addresses for anything, but it IS a big problem. We've already had one complaint, but unfortunately there was no way for me to know until they were all sent out and I heard back from the complainer.

I'm sure I can figure out how to fix it for future mailings, but I'm not sure what to do about this one. I could send a mass apology, but that might just draw attention to the mistake (for people who haven't noticed/don't care at the moment). Clearly I'll send an apology to the person who replied, at the very least. But I'm not sure what the best course of action is for the rest.

3. Well they've already said they wont book with us.
I can understand they're upset. I don't know that there's much we can do about it but say we're sorry and offer an explanation.

Frankly, all these emails were going to personal accounts, not other companies or anything, so it's not like other people will see the 5 others in the group and start spamming them (most likely). But, I can still see that it isn't nice and should be avoided.

5. some people are just irritable, most people give their email addresses out pretty freely
but get so offended if it happens accidentally :eyes:

2. yikes
I think you have the right idea about handling it on a case by case basis. Most people might not notice, or assume it's standard procedure.

7. Post an apology to the web site, if any...

...with personalized apologies to anyone who complains.

Most importantly, tell them exactly how you'll prevent such a thing from happening again, and maybe they'll do business with your company.

9. If it were me, I would only apologize to those that complain.
Some people take that sort of thing more seriously than others.
