What's up with junk food ads and masturbation?
First Dr Pepper did their ad with the ode to Asian fetish porn “Turning Japanese.” Now Wendys is using the Violent Femmes song “Blister in the Sun”, the one about the guy who stains his sheets with his big hands because his girlfriend won’t put out.

Junk food has always been physically unhealthy but once upon a time it was about a great communal experience: Buying the whole world a Coke so it could sing in perfect harmony.

Now we just want our fix so we can cower in a darkened room and indulge ourselves without having to interact with any other living souls.

When did this great cultural shift take place and what can we do to change it?

1. I'm sorry, what? I just went blind.
It's either from the formaldehyde in my Diet Coke, or

2. I noticed that
but I think a lot of people don't know who the Vapors are, nor do they know the song.

Or is it some weird subtextual thing?

3. I noticed the Wendy's commercials a couple of months ago....
and had a :wtf: moment.

Do the advertisers even KNOW the song?

4. Interacting with other souls...

Given how cruel people can be, I can say I won't complain to any euphemisms presented in these commercials.

6. People can also be very enriching
Do yourself a favor and pay attention to these words of wisdom from Lester Bangs.

Really.

Just for the record, I would like to have it be known by anyone who cares that I don’t think life is a perpetual dive. And even though it’s genuinely frightening, I don’t think Richard Hell’s fascination with death is anything else but stupid. I suspect almost every day that I’m living for nothing, I get depressed and I feel self-destructive a lot of the time and a lot of the time I don’t like myself. What’s more, the proximity of other human beings often fills me with overwhelming anxiety, but I also feel that this precarious sentience is all that we’ve got and, as simplistic as may seem, it’s a person’s duty to the potential of his own soul to make the best of it. We’re all stuck on this miserable earth where life is essentially tragic, but there are glints of beauty and bedrock joy that come shining through from time to precious time to remind anyone who cares to see that there is something higher and larger than ourselves. And I am not talking about your putrefying gods, I am talking about a sense of wonder about life itself and the feeling that there is some redemptive factor you must at least search for until you drop dead of natural causes. And all the Richard Hells are chickenshits who trash the precious gift too blithely, and they deserve to be given no credence, but shocked awake in some violent matter. Either that or be spanked and put to bed.

7. My guess is the ad folks never read the lyrics to the songs
Otherwise they never would have used the Clash's "London Calling" for Jag-U-Ar ads

10. What troubles me is that they do know the lyrics
Ad folks might be "evil" but they're not stupid and they're very good at what they do.

Somehow, it's been determined that the masses would rather be alone than interacting with others.

And that bothers me.

it seemed a terrible and tricky way to use that beauty.

or the Ramones to sell phones, or whatever. :puke:

8. I'm not familiar with either of those
But I do sometimes wonder if advertisers and the like are actually aware of a song's meaning or if they just choose them for rhythm and beat. Or maybe some mischievous employee suggests them.

At my store, on the corporate music loop, there have been some really odd selections - songs about sex with underage girls, or double entendres or what have you. I honestly think the people who choose them have no clue.

I'd just like Korporate Amerika to bring us together, not drag us apart.

Is that too much to ask?
