someone who REALLY loves Border Collies. But he only had one when I met him. Every year I run into this guy at the dog park and there's one more... all rescues.

2. They're smart and sweet, but the herding mentality can be really tiresome
Golden retrievers are the world's greatest breed!

7. ok
Today I told this guy that having 5 border collies is a sure sign of mental illness... 4 is right on the edge, but 5 pushes you into a firm diagnosis. ;)

...but the day you see him sporting a Border Collie fur coat the worm will turn.

there would be that many border collies that need to be rescued. They are cool dogs. I wish I had one. But I do love our two rescue mutts.

10. You'd be amazed how many people just can't deal with their intelligence.
And/or, don't understand that such an intelligent dog needs something to occupy his time, or he's going to tear stuff up and get VERY neurotic. As long as you understand that, they're the best pet you can have. But if you don't, and don't deal with it well, they can be the dogs from hell, unfortunately.

11. Absolutely RIGHT!
I did know a couple that purchased a border collie puppy. As a puppy, they loved it and it showed intelligence very early. The problem was they purchased the puppy as a pet/house dog. BIG MISTAKE!!
As Shakespeare said a dog with their intelligence need to be kept occupied. That's why they make such great working dogs for things like herding and the like.
Anyway, the dog DESTROYED their furniture, shoes, clothing in a effort to alleviate boredom. Many well-meaning people found this out.

I recall reading an article on border collies as pets. The article basically sent the message that, unless you intend to keep the dog busy, don't. They will steal your car keys as well as your check book and your credit cards. Get a fish.

26. I Can See It
Border collies are smart and EXTREMELY active. You live in an apartment or small house, buy a cute puppy, and the next thing you know it's jumping out the window to get outside. Not for most people. Smart animals do not make great pets for people who just want a cute animal to follow them around.

13. People get them because they are cute as puppies. They don't
realize that Border Collies are full of energy and need a job. If they don't have a job, the invent one which isn't always a good thing.

Border Collies are not great with kids. Most parents don't appreciate a dog who herds children...so off to the pound they go.

I remember taking him to the dog park and as we entered the park this man standing there says, "Now THAT'S a dog."

17. Cody was a very handsome boy, my husband and I admired his photo another time
a while back. We have a border collie heeler mix, Sally, but she's pretty bossy so I don't quite trust her at the dog park. Anytime we're at the people park she puts on a frisbee and tennis ball catching show almost as good as the "pro" one that performs at our town's country fair.

23. I often say (lately) that I should have gotten one instead of having a kid
I'm convinced that a border collie has a higher IQ than most teenage boys.

(don't get me wrong,... I love my kid. It's just been a very tough year for me.)

25. I had a neighbor who kept a flock of sheep for his two border collies
His wife ended up learning to spin wool and made some money selling it to craftspeople. All because they didn't want their dogs to get bored.

I always thought that was cute. Great dogs. :loveya:
