6. I have two dogs and a bird
The bird gets a mixture of seeds, fruit flavored and other pellets, some dried fruits, some fresh fruits and veggies and the occasional raw peanut. The mixture and brands change over time.

The renal dog eats Science Diet dry Prescription Diet K/D kibble. He is nearly five years old and has eaten it since he was only five months old. Like most renal dogs he has a poor appetite sometimes so I often use incentives to entice him to eat. Raw apples, carrots, rice are favorite food additives. His diet is fat, protein, salt and phosphorous restricted. He is doing very well on this diet so I am reluctant to change it. And his vet has actively encouraged making no modifications at this time.

The other dog eats Science Diet Dry Adult Small Bites Weight Loss kibble. I used to cook for him from time to time and switch his foods around to give him variety but quit when the renal dog went on his prescription diet. It makes feeding much easier.

I would prefer to cook for my dogs but am reluctant to because of the medical issues involved in providing an adequate and appropriate diet for my renal dog. In the past the vet has not been receptive to this. We have a regular checkup next month. I will revisit the issue then. Given all the problems with contaminated dog food perhaps she will be more receptive. In the meantime I have been researching canine nutrition and trying to put together some recipes that have the appropriate nutritional content.

I had been feeding them regular, but I switched them to Senior recently. My older dog Casey is approaching seven years old and could lose a couple of pounds; my younger dog Vicki only eats what our other dog eats, and it won't hurt her a bit to eat the Senior kind. I mix in some boiled chicken and rice (which they think is the greatest thing in the world!) for a special treat sometimes. :D

34. hm - that's good to know
Purina One dry is one of hte only 'mainstream' cat foods that has its first ingredient as chicken (lots of other "grocery store" brands have ground corn as the first ingredient). One of my girls now has some scabs on her back, and acts like she's got itchy skin so I wonder if the other foods are causing her problems?

30. Hubby buys whatever is on sale at Fred Meyer,
but I'm taking over the shopping soon as this bag is gone and buying only Kirkland. I don't remember exactly which of the Kirkland varieties it is (have it saved on my home computer) but there was a thread in the pets forum a while back listing criteria on how to choose a dog food and Kirkland scored high on all counts.

I've started cooking vegan for myself and whoever in the family chooses to join me on any given day, and it seems prudent to feed my furbabies more healthily also.

31. For me, I have to watch the budget
living on a fixed income is not fun in any way.

When my Jessica was alive, I fed all the furkits a large can about twice or three times a week, dividing it up among them, and they had dry food all the time. Usually the large canned store brand or Friskies, with Sheba for special occasions.

Since I lost Jessica, I've cut back on the canned food since the others are in good health and have all their teeth, and they get dry food put out 24/7. I was giving them either Purina or Friskies, but I started on the Walmart brand called "Special Kitty" (usually the fish flavors) and they all love it.

As far as the kits' general health, the old ladies (who all passed in the early 90s) ate primarily dry food until they were very senior, and lived to be 16 1/2 to 17 1/2 at which point all three gradually ended up with renal failure. Two of the more recent "roommates" lived to be 15--Amanda passed when she ended up with a tooth abcess draining into her brain; and my Jessica ended up dying from complications of diabetes. The other 4 are still very healthy, one (12 yo) weighing in at about 20-22 lbs (he reminds me of a Kliban cat--small head on a big body. He's a Maine Coon cat lookalike, though, so he's built big anyhow), (13 yo) one at 16, one (12 yo) at 10 and the youngest male (age 5), Oliver, at about 8.

With my health and lack of wealth, life is somewhat easier to buy the dry and let them have it available to them. Oliver, who belonged to someone else before me, won't touch canned food at all, and only eats dry. And the others are so used to being spoiled, still eat pretty well, even if they do come looking for table scraps (which they get on occasion, limited to what remains on my plate when I finish a meal).

36. Ain't nothing wrong with that
pet food, contrary to popular opinion, does NOT have to be harvested and prepared by virgins under a full moon to be nutritious. So long as your pets are doing well on their food, why change it?

I had a cat who refused to eat anything but Alley Cat. He wouldn't starve himself, he'd just go out and kill more birds/squirrels/baby bunnys/lizards/snakes to supplement his unsatisfactory diet. Even when he got older and wasn't such a good hunter anymore, he would refuse anything but his favorite. Who were we to tell him no? He was old and decrepit (still had all of his teeth to the end though!) but loved that crunchy food.

32. The dog gets Dads
Which is just weird, as I generally steer clear of cheaper foods, but finances forced me to choose a cheaper (by FAR) diet this last time. But she loves it, her coat looks better, she just seems to feel better (she is just full of energy lately), so what the hell, I am now a cheap dog food person. And she only craps once a day now (as opposed to 2-3x on the expensive chow), it is well formed poo -- no chocolate pudding here, we run a logging business apparently, which ain't to shabby, either, seeing as how 1 deposit weighs the same as a chihuahua most of the time.

The guinea pigs get Lab diet Guinea Pig pellets (I get it from work), and tons of veggies and fruits, timothy hay, and, in summer, grazing on the lawn (LOTS of clover and dandelions, a smorgasbord of gluttony). The fish get flakes, but I am switching back to pelleted, they seemed better on it and the tank wasn't quite so nasty (and one of the fish is a middle tank feeder, she won't eat from the top of the tank).

Actually, we're taking him to the vet tomorrow for his annual check up, shots and grooming. We want to meet the new doctor. The previous one was killed in a motorcycle accident last summer, and although the doggie has been in for grooming since, he hasn't had to go to the vet. We looked at the organic dog food at a (people) health food store last weekend and the Newman's Own looked yummy. Well...the pic of Paul Newman on the bag looked yummy.

I've heard more bad things about it than good, but almost all with cats, which is why I'm asking.

They did an interview on Animal Voices with the owner and some pet owners (icky term, can't think of a good alternative ATM) that had pets get sick on his food, and he came off pretty slimy and evasive. LMK if you want a copy, I'm not sure I still have it, but I could find it again no problem.

55. That would be good to have, if you can find it.
She seems to be okay on it, and really loves it (it's her favorite of the rotation). But then, maybe she wouldn't do so well if she weren't on a rotation diet. I know it's higher in protein than the others (assuming the info on the bag is true--I'm skeptical these days), so I feed her a bit less and/or give her more fruits and veggies when she's getting it. But I'm always looking for info as to how to care for them.

Btw, the cats LOVE the Wysong. The one who's been ill and was barely eating has gained weight on it and eats it voraciously, which is a most pleasant change!!

50. Innova Evo dry for all the
mammals. The dogs get some regular Innova with their Evo because they think they should have both. Dogs also get shin bones from cows that the local butcher shop gives us as a treat. These are guarded from all other animals and kept with each dog at all times until they disappear. The cats get dry and a can(shared)of Evo wet once a day as a treat or they think they are being abused. They will throw themselves against the cabinet containing the wet food while yowling at full throttle if they even think you might forget. Ferrets get Evo for ferrets now that they make one. Used to get Zupreme ferret. I tried mixing them but found the Zupreme tossed to the side.
They all get a chicken mush for a treat. It is boiled chicken, organ meats, chicken liver and supplements run through a food processor. When I had sick ferrets this was their food with any additions needed for that individual. The cats and ferrets get theirs heated and fed like soft food. The dogs prefer theirs still frozen in cube form.
The birds get Zupreme pellets for their type as a available at all time food. They also get seed, fruits, veggies, nuts and some egg. The Lory is allows hibiscus flowers when in bloom and honey water. My grey will not eat chicken or any other meat. He will say that he is "No,not a cannibal" should you try giving him chicken.
All foods are approved and recommended by their vets.

The Hill's was recommended by our vet, and lately I thought maybe it was just a paid promotion but whatever, the cats are happy.
And every night I split a Fancy Feast between the 3 of them.

63. Purina Cat Chow - Vitality Formula (for old cats)
Carl's about 16 years old and is still very healthy. He still sprints up and down my stairs.

But he doesn't like to be disturbed when he's sleeping

65. Rio and Layla BabyCat get Purina Indoor formula; once in a while they get
to split a can of moist food (couple of times a week)
They really like "Trout Feast"

66. For dry, my cat gets a mix of Iams and Kirkland
and for canned he gets about a tablespoon of canned food in the morning, and again a little less at night. His favorite of all time is Figaro Tuna, so every other can is that one, and I mix it up with other brands in between, right now Friskies. Never give him Whiskas (barfs it up like clockwork)and there was one or two brands he wouldn't even eat, one was Western Family and he wasn't too crazy for Nutri Plan (which I think wound up on the bad list). On rare occasions he gets a few shrimp. If I open a can of asparagus or green beans he gets some, loves asparagus more. Brewers yeast on his dry food and Friskies crunchy shrimp-salmon treats occasionally. The very rare occasional little piece of raw salmon (boy, do cats love it raw! He don't even like it cooked!) and if I open a can of albacore tuna he definitely gets a serving though I'm not sure he likes that better than canned cat food. He got interested in plain Ritz crackers once while I was chomping on them with him on my lap. Silly cat raised up his paw, like "gimme a piece!" He chomped down a little piece like it was good but then didn't want another one.

Another rare thing I give him is a little soft-scrambled egg with a tad of butter on it. He doesn't seem that excited about it but does eat it.

67. Royal Canin
Some of the critters were already on that brand for prescriptions, and the recent scare has us weaning the rest off Eukanuba (though we only fed dry).

68. Purina Beneful
We bought the first time when it was inexpensive because it had just come out and they wanted people to try it for their dogs. He seemed to like it and it seemed like it was healthy. I looked at the ingredients the other day and it doesn't seem to have wheat gluten.
