1. My grandmother was a devout atheist.
Quite the scandal in the 1940-50's Midwest.

2. My brother cleaned out the checking account, took the car,
and ditched his wife and kids to go ball some chicks.

This was about 25 years ago.

12. Yeah.
He's married again and has pretty much settled down. I don't think he has seen his kids for years, though, and I hear they hate him, so that's pretty sad.

5. After my grandfather died we found some film footage of him
kissing another woman and dandling a small child on his lap. It appears that grampa had a life we didn't know anything about. Seriously.

6. Christ, got all day? Okay, one item will suffice -
It turns out my oldest sister is not even related to me - the story was she was my dad's from his first marriage but it seems she was actually my dad's first wife's by his best friend (no wonder the marriage didn't work!). We just found this out last year when my sister died.

Mom was married to a Marine for 15 years and no kids. Then she gets pregnant by my father within 6 months of divorcing said Marine. Funny thing is her side of the family was so thrilled that she finally had a baby that none of them ever attached any kind of stigma to me. In 1962 having a baby outside of marriage was a pretty big deal in Podunk, PA...

9. Not really dirty laundry anymore in 2007
but alcoholism runs rampant in my family.

Great grandfather died of it probably. Cause of death was burst appendix, but drank while in the hospital.
Great uncle died on skid row of it.
great uncle was drunk from WWII up to the late 70's. Died sober in recovery.
Great aunt killed while driving drunk.
Uncle died of organ failure due to acute alcoholism.

Probably more, but back then they didn't talk about it...

10. Dirty Laundry - Part II
My paternal grandparents could not get their parents permission to get married, as they were underage in Chicago.

They eloped to Crown Point Indiana where the age was lower, had my grandfather's uncle come in from New York as their witness, and got married anyhow.

Wasn't a good idea, as the marriage only lasted 70 years...

His brothers, my uncles, consider it scandalous.

They love each other, so who cares? I think they make a nice couple.
