8. Anybody who can completely
destroy "Ain't Misbehavin'" like that knows nothing about music. Egads that was awful...it was honestly hard to watch. Ack.

Gina's "Smile" ran circles 'round that dreck. Just not sure what America is thinking...

12. Tony Bennett tried to tell her she was butchering it
She didn't even understand the premise of the lyric. Horrible.

It's interesting, because if true, I should scale back on Haley (but I probably won't, because she grates on my last nerve). Evidently, the Nell Carter version from Broadway had that "and you, and you and you" thingie in it. Anyone know? I never heard it that way, so it sounded completely foreign to me...I've always heard classic versions (which I love).

In total, I agree with Mr. Bennett...it's about ONE person you love, not multiples. And on that alone, I would have rethought my approach once he mentioned that, at least if I were competing on AI. But then again I'm not. ;-)

13. Haley's tits and legs saved her ass
Gotta give it her in that she paid attention to last year's competition.

McPhee proved last year that you can outlast better singers if you just expose more and more skin as the competition gets tighter.

I couldn't stand McPhee, either, and couldn't believe she outlasted everybody else except Taylor.

A bikini?

I'm still amazed though - some AI boards out there have people singing her praises. I'm still trying to understand it. :wtf:

Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 02:03 AM by susanna
"Ain't Misbehavin'" you would be hard put to actually qualify the version she sang. The only thing I recognized were the lyrics. And I'm not hard to please about innovation. It was just weird in every way...I COMPLETELY agree with Simon (1st time ever) with his, "it's a bit pageant-y."

In interest of fairness, I liked Gina, who went home. Didn't love her, and doubt she would have made it 'til the end, but she was different. Ah well. So goes anything that lets stupid people vote more than once. :-)

on edit: adding contexty things

16. I wish they would do like Dancing with the Stars does
Let the viewers vote the bottom two or three, then let the judges decide. BUT: the judges can't know ahead of time who gets voted off, like they do now.

21. On the Grease competition, they took the bottom two -
who then performed for the judges, and the judges decided who to save.

They did that right up until the final two Dannys and two Sandys, and then America's vote decided.

23. That or the DWTS approach would work much, much better
DWTS tweaked their voting system -- AI can do the same thing.

Gina was quite good. She deserved top five.

18. Perhaps America is waking up and realizing this is nothing more than a Karoake Show
Edited on Thu Apr-05-07 09:06 AM by LynneSin
So we might as well have fun and vote for the guy. I mean, I can't imagine of the zillions of people who audition for AI each year that this kid Sanjaya was one of the best to bring on the show. OR perhaps the producers thought the kid was goofy enough to put on the show for a few weeks to help boost ratings and think that eventually the public will vote him out.

The fact that this Sanjaya (or whatever his name is) is still in the competition shows just how manufactured this crappy show is.

Oh, I voted for him but I just went to http://www.votefortheworst.com/ so I didn't have to watch the show

20. I speculated on Sanjaya being a deliberate "goof" earlier in the week
Edited on Thu Apr-05-07 09:56 AM by Mike Daniels
It can't be argued that people tune in for the auditions to see the trainwreck performances.

I think the producers specifically decided to carry the "trainwreck" factor into the actual competition and brought in some marginal performers who they totally expected to be voted off before they got to "Final Ten" week.

Unfortunately, for them, the idea backfired and now a contestant who under normal circumstance would have been gone weeks ago now apparently has a good chance to make it to the final five.

7. I did, too. I thought she was different in a very good way.
Most of the big "wow" contestants are all R&B oriented - or so it seems - and it was nice to see someone more rock-oriented represented. That it was a woman made it even better, at least to me.

You know something, though? You could tell it sunk in for some of the contestants tonight about how ridiculous this all has gotten, and GG's send off was proof. I didn't see it as all that sad (though I know it was for Gina) in the sense that it was obvoius to me that a lot of them know what's up and were supporting her. That tells me that she made some really good friends, and that is always a good thing. So I guess it's a bittersweet thing in my mind.

It's funny because this is the first season I've actually watched this show (long story). I think it is the last, too. Ah well.

11. I think there's gonna be some rule changes next season
All those naysayers who hate Idol anyway and want to see it canceled are salivating over Sanjaya staying on. Well to the naysayers, I say you've got at least 4 more years of overhype and overcoverage, because Idol's supposedly guaranteed to run through 2011.

And for the record, I know Idol is pure fluff, but I need some fluff in my life to unwind with.

15. Three ideas for changing the rules next year
1. Instead of wiping the slate clean each week you run a cumulative total with the lowest running total getting eliminated. The weaker contestants will end up in a hole early and hopefully groups like VFTW won't be able to make up the difference once the competition gets tighter.

2. Have the judges have a say in the actual result by letting them actually score the contestants and then have that score multiplied into the viewer totals. I doubt that VFTW and Stern combined could generate enough votes to overcome a low ranking from the judges.

3. The easiest and more likely to be executed - change the vote from "vote for your favorite to vote for who gave the weakest performance"

charge $ for voting. A buck per vote. That oughta help.

17. We complain, but it's the judges who put AI fans here in the first place.
The Dawg, the Lush, and the Limey -- along with the producers, I'm sure -- decided who the Final 24 would be during the Hollywood group auditions. They passed on the Janis Joplin-inspired singer. They passed on Bailey Brown (although she did forget her lyrics, and she was stuck with some bratty girls in the group audition). It was Randy, Paula, and Simon who sent Sanjaya through because they knew he had that Kevin Covais spoiler thing going. However, what they didn't bank on was that Sanjaya is actually crazy enough to thrive in his position.

I have to give the kid props for having brass balls for being so over the top and driving his haters mad. I said it before and I'll say it again: While I appreciate the talent of a Jordin in this competition, I love a train wreck even more. And Sanjaya is my one-way ticket on a derailed New Delhi Express.

I'll greatly miss Rock 'em, Sock 'em Gina Glocksen, but I'm hoping Vote for the Worst pulls an upset with Sanjaya. If that happens, then perhaps Idol will get serious about putting the right people in the competition.

Ah, who am I kidding?

Go Mowgli!

19. It blows my mind that some people have nothing better to do
It's just a talent show, if ya don't like it don't watch it. People like to comment that the show is for losers. Now I wonder who are the real losers? The people who watch the show, or the people that are taking time and spending their money voting for the worst, just to dog the TV show.

Let alone spend my evening voting a hundred times for someone. These people who have nothing better to do than "vote for the worst" have to be TOTAL LOSERS!!!

26. I don't get it either
Edited on Thu Apr-05-07 11:38 AM by Mike Daniels
There are many other shows that are a bigger killer of brain cells than AI. However, I don't see critics of those shows going through such extremes to destroy or otherwise damage those shows beyond repair. Most just choose not to watch the program in question.

But then, one probably shouldn't expect much logical though from people who take advice on how to maximize their Tuesday evening free time from Howard Stern.
