All of the sharpness, none of the face-slicing action. She uses it to cut the hair on the back of my neck sometimes.

47. I get the sides of my head shaved
with a straight razor. My hair grows so damn fast, and if the hair touches the sides of my ears then I'm out of uniform. Shaved vs tightly trimmed increases the time between barber shop visits by about 3 days.
My barber doesn't charge extra for using a straight razor. Since I don't go there as often it helps to save some money as well :-)

I use the five-blade gizmo myself, and have recently started using that " King of All Shaves" gel. Burns like hell. Shave in the shower, with a fog-proof mirror. Keeps me from looking "swarthy" at the end of the day. God, I hate to shave....

74. I always did too until I started shaving in the shower
the steam/heat in there really helps a lot. I don't even use a mirror, but go by feel. It takes a bit of practice (I had to do touch ups for a little while at first), but now I can shave pretty quickly in the shower and almost never cut myself anymore. Plus I don't break out as much either, although still do sometimes.

21. Straight razor, badger brush, and Old Spice cup.
I perfected that in the 60s. I even took that kit to Viet Nam (where I was probably the only pilot flying combat missions in Laos with a gold Hamilton Railway Special pocket-watch in my breast pocket). If band-aids and/or styptic are hard to find, skip the straight razor (or if you have shaky hands the morning after).

I now use a fancy Fusion blade, LAB Series tub-cream, and a badger brush. I do still have my straight razor, but the TSA frowns on those.

BTW: I shaved my beard the day I sold the mountain house last year. I'm about ready to grow it out again.

38. An old barber taught me the razor trick.
I think you can still get Old Spice shaving soap cakes and cups. However, I highly recommend the LAB Series product. You can get LAB Series tubs and tubes at Nordstrom's or online. Slick, slick shave. Chase it with a little Tea Tree Cream on the face.

To look sharp,
And to feel sharp too,
Use the razor that is built for you ...

23. blade or straight razor is the best shave. However...
for expediency, I use electric. I have so many trips with obscenely early pickup times (I'll be up at 3:15 tomorrow). I set the alarm for 25 minutes before pickup, and I always shower in the morning. I have about 60 to 90 seconds to devote to shaving.

I'm Dave. Presently flying the 737-800. It's a good mix of domestic and international flying.

I did enjoy the -80 series. We also had the MD-90, which, when we had a DFW base, had some great trips on it. Spent a lot of time out west, which is no small feat at this airline.

And an electric Phillips Norelco Bodygroom for everywhere else. The Bodygroom is tres cool. It's battery operated and can be used in the shower. I like to keep my nasty bits closely trimmed or even clean shaven for hotter weather. I have a real aversion to body hair, so I take it all off. Legs and underarms too.

60. Pre-treat with Magic Cream Shave, then use a blade
You can also use Nair, but Magic Cream Shave is better formulated. It says it's exclusively for black men, but like a good libbrul, I'm color-blind. I am deeply grateful for yet another African-American-initiated improvement in the culture of manliness. Ebony's online Yahoo! store has a lot of similar products. (You should not use depilating powders until you have a lot of experience with the cream method and a devil-may-care attitude about your face. They are difficult to work with.) Magic Cream Shave is widely sold at retail for about three bucks a tube and it comes in two strengths. The tube also says it's "fragrant" but it has minimum added perfume -- the fragrance is from the depilatory itself.

I have baby-like skin but the beard of Hercules, God's punishment for my choice of a Russian Jewish father and an Irish-English mother.

Here is La Technique: smear the depilatory on your face and remove it as soon as you feel any kind of burning sensation. At first, you won't be able to keep it on for more that a few minutes, but after a week or two, you'll be able to keep it on for a half an hour or more. Just make sure to keep it moist -- wet your fingertips, rub the water in lightly, and rinse your hands off.

To remove it, wipe it off gently, then rinse your face well. Aveeno Shave Cream works well with it and is my shaving cream of choice. Only a little is required. Gels don't work quite as well -- not for me, anyway. You may find otherwise.

Although the depilatory is not (and should NOT be) painful, I do find shaving to be painful under any circumstances. So I also mix a little anesthetic liquid, like Bactine or J&J Antiseptic Wash, in with the shaving cream. It's all quite easy on the budget. I've even used straight Lanacaine, but you only really need a little.

This may all sound horrific, but it isn't. The active ingredients, thioglycolates, are strong alpha-hydroxy acids that have an anti-wrinkle and anti-infection effect. It literally melts into the hair -- not the skin. Where there is no hair, the stuff cleans the skin's pores out thoroughly, so with care, you can use it on areas where there is little hair. Just don't get it near your eyes! (So if you want to use it on your brow for deep cleansing, roll up a dry washcloth and hold it over your eyes and/or eyebrows.)

Also, don't use it on active pimples and acne outbreaks. Common sense is called for. If you have a skin condition, don't use this method until you have a chance to consult a dermatologist!

Some of the hair will just come off when you wash the cream away, but the rest of it will need to be shaved. You can then use even a fairly dull razor and you will still get a remarkably close shave with even LESS irritation that you are accustomed to. If you have a light beard, you could conceivably get a good shave with a plastic edge like an old credit card. (There are actually plastic shaving blades -- check out that Ebony link.)

Do not expect perfect shaves for the first two weeks, the same as when you change to any other shaving method. You should also let your beard grow out a little more often for the first few weeks. And go slow with the depilatory exposure times. If you are patient, you will be rewarded with incredibly close, even shaves and an improvement in your skin's health.

I pre-treat, spend a half-hour reading, then shave. After that, a shower. There is still a little facial irritation (read: pain) as with any blade shave, but a lot fewer nicks, so the overall pain and irritation is far less in most cases. It all depends on your ability to pay attention to details, like how the depilatory works on your beard and skin.

It may sound like a lot of work, but the technique can be mastered quickly. It's a lot more comfortable and actually saves hirsute dudes like the Big Ol' Pig a lot of time.

80. Whatever you do, don't buy them on eBay
I did last year, and discovered that they were cheap Chinese-made knock-offs. Apparently, over 90% of the Mach III Turbos on eBay are counterfeit.

68. Both.
It really depends on what I'm doing that day. If it's not important that I shave well, I use the electric. Otherwise, Gillette Fusion for me.

70. There isn't a both option,
since I shave my entire head I generally switch. One day I'll use the razor then the next I can use the electric one. It works out ok cause my hair is grey normally so it doesn't look terrible if I don't use the blade everyday.

83. Where do you get them for that price?
For a buck a piece, I might give them a tryout over my usual Mach III.

77. I hated electrics until I discovered Braun
Best. shave. ever. No razor burn, no stubble, no irritation. Smooth as a baby's behind.

I'm on my third Braun.

78. Electric - why I still have a nose on my face
My grandmother gave me one before I really needed to shave. Been with them ever since.

I've only been shaved with a razor once. When I came down out of the mountains in Nepal, and got rid of my beard.

I also have a razor powered by a pull-cord gyroscope.

82. Electric for daily use, straight razor for special occasions.
I like the electric because it's fast, and my wife likes the stubble at the end of the day :)

89. Blade
I use the blade b/c it gets closer. It also hacks my face to pieces more than the electric, although the electric still makes my face look pinkish and irritated. Damn sensitive skin... Honestly, I truly hate shaving, and if my facial hair ever fills in enough that I could grow a beard I'd toss out all of my razors for good. However, I'm still patchy in some spots and I'm 23, so the prospect of future beard growth isn't looking all that good...

90. Both!
Not at the same time, though. I usually use the blade, Mach 3, but when I'm lazy and skip the shower, or shower the nite before, I use the Philips (aka Norelco). The buzzy one doesn't do as good a job; if I use it two days in a row things start to look ratty.
