A sixth-grade teacher at Southwest Elementary School in Evergreen Park is under investigation for putting a plastic bag over a student's head.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Evergreen Park Police Department were called to investigate.
School officials sent letters home with students late last week, detailing the incident that took place about six weeks ago.
In the letter, Supt. Craig Fiegel said the teacher placed a plastic bag over a student's head as part of an ill-conceived joke.
"It is our understanding that the bag had a hole cut in it, and at no time was the student in any physical danger," Fiegel said.
The student and her family don't believe Bruce Lupori had any ill intentions, the letter said.
But the teacher used poor judgment, Fiegel said.
He said he does not believe students are in any danger from the veteran art teacher, who has taught in the district for 22 years.
"I believe he knows that that isn't something you do. It was an unfortunate thing to do," Fiegel said. "You have to weigh in some of the intent and look at the situation. We all have lapses in judgment, make mistakes."
A spokesman for DCFS said Friday it had yet to receive a report.
