Man Arrives at DUI Hearing Drunk

From Associated Press
April 02, 2007 3:39 PM EDT
YORK, Pa. - A man who arrived at court drunk for a drunken-driving hearing was again charged with driving under the influence, police said.

Paul H. Zeigler, 45, of Glen Rock, appeared at a preliminary hearing at the Shrewsbury district court on March 26 for a DUI charge from December.

Police said Zeigler appeared to be intoxicated at the hearing, according to police records.

After his court appearance, Zeigler failed a portable breath test for alcohol and was taken into custody for a blood test, police said.

The second test revealed that Zeigler's blood-alcohol level was twice the legal driving limit and he was charged with DUI, police said.

3. Doesn't surprise me either.
An under-aged drunk totaled my husband's truck while it was sitting in his parking spot at work. The guy had been released from jail for DUI that day, and he was celebrating.

He hit the truck so hard that he knocked the spare tire through an office window. Then, he tried to flee on foot. One of the neighbors stopped him and called the cops. It wasn't hard to detain him, because he was falling-down drunk.

He was driving his mother's car, because his was still impounded. Her insurance had to foot the bill.

6. I had to go to court in Frederick MD once and the guy sitting next to me was hammered
He HAD to be. He looked like him had been on quite a bender.

I was there due to a mix up with the state of Va. over insurance on a car I didn't own anymore-I,of course, put on a suit...I was shocked at how people showed up at court--Stone Cold Steve Austin t-shirts, ratty jeans, and drunk/high. I saw one lawyer rip into his client for not wearing a suit. I got off with basically the fee I paid my lawyer even though I didn't do anything wrong. The guy after me had almost exactly the same circumstances and he got his license suspended for 6 months and paid the same amount I did (to my lawyer) in fees.

7. What do you think the chances are that the judge will buy into his defense on the DUI?

8. Quite common
Around here it's amazing (rural CO). Guys will drive themselves to court hearings on license revocations.

Two things at work: 1) if you're addicted to alcohol, you're addicted to alcohol, and 2) crime makes you stupid.

9. Local lawyer showed up drunk at hearing for his DUI client.
He's our town joke.
One of his billboards (that's right, BILLBOARD) says "Call 1-800-D-I-V-O-R-C-E".
Another "Call 1-800-B-A-N-K-R-U-P".
Class act.
