A visit to IKEA: a personal oddysey
Edited on Mon Apr-02-07 10:03 AM by eyepaddle
My oh my, how I've changed as the years roll on; it makes me wonder what else may be in store for me.

Also, WTF is it with Swedes and funky cool furniture and furniture related marketing concepts? How does one country become so identified with one such market niche? What's next--an Estonian revolution in roofing styles? As an observation passed along without judgement: IKEA certainly seems to attract a very large sampling of the females of the human species.

A bit of personal history: Once upon a time (fifteen or so year ago in college) my roommates and I had our power shut off, it was shut for close to three months--primarily because we lived like animals and preferred to blow our meager money on alcohol and pot than on mundane necessities such as utilities. We also preferred to spend our time laying around baked or maybe over at a girlfriend's place than cleaning our own apartment. Tragically this included cleaning out the freezer when the power got shut off, to make matters worse the only thing left in the freezer was a whole cut-up chicken. After being too lazy to throw that out for a few days, we became scared of the stink we were sure was building and just pulled more tubes and thought about other matters. After a couple of weeks (yes, I said weeks) we opened the freezer and the smell was...impressive, to say the least; but what was really scary was the mottled, almost pulsating mass of mold which had enveloped the chicken package. Definitely something worthy a B horror movie.

After taking a day or two to make plans for our attack we mixed up a gallon or so of very, very strong bleach solution and fired it into the freezer and closed the door to let it work its chemical magic. The next day the evil being was vanquished and I REACHED IN AND PLUCKED OUT THE CHICKEN BY HAND and sprinted to the garbage outside. Even with windows wide open in the chilly Minnesota fall it took a few days for the stench to leave the odd corners of the apartment.

Believe it or not, I again live with that roommate: I think my bachelor barbarian semi-nomad cred is quite secure. A recent girlfriend refers to my current house as "The Biohazard."

But all this ends today, and tomorrow. I am moving into my own modern style one bedroom apartment tonight (and over the next couple of days) so I need some furniture--hence the trip to IKEA. If you are still reading this post, I bet you get my point--I don't have a lick of design sense in me, and up to this point in my life I have had no truck with those who do. But something seems to be stirring inside me, a desire--a desire to be comfortable in my abode--even if egad, it requires forethought in buying furniture and god forbid, regular vacuuming. (I'm good about washing the dishes already--that was probably the first step im ny metamorphosis from pig to human)

So there I was at IKEA yesterday, bewildered by the experience, more than a little amused by all the conventional happy couples ignoring the one large, single guy in their midst, thinking for the first time, maybe ever, "you know, that IS a nice living room set! I think that lamp will owrk well with those tables and it will match my current couch...."

Dear God, what have I become?

2. Hey now!
I kept thinking it was like fight club in reverse--where Brad Pitt's character was the protagaonist, being slowly challenged and led astray into a new world by conventional Ed Norton.

I kept looking around for Helena Bonham Carter, but alas, the parallels end short of that! ;)

3. I hope this doesn't induce you to join Fight Club
wasn't it IKEA that put Brad Pitt over the edge?

My S.O. had a panic attack in IKEA one night. He started hyperventilating and yelling at me (it was really embarrassing). I yelled back and told him he was behaving like he was having some sort of attack, and he confessed to feeling completely overwhelmed and freaked out.

It is a bit overwhelming, but I like it. The 1st one in the US is right up the street from us. Great place for stuff like glassware, framed pictures and posters, lamps, etc. Plus the food is good and extremely cheap.

But now, I go alone or have him wait in the car.

That shit heap Ed Norton moved into after his IKEA induced meltdown seemed very familar to me--I din't have to imagine, I just needed to reminisce. It's more like I am leaving Fight Club.

I had a similar "fight club attack" as the SO called it. I enjoyed getting to feel "superior" to all of the sheep throughout the place.....until I started tossing things into the cart.

5. there's nothing more surreal than an Ikea
With all of the yuppie couples, like you said. It's bizarre to watch people fawn over the clever uses of plastic and plywood. I love how you are forced to wind your way through the multi-level store like so much human cattle. The experience is topped off with an order of swedish meatballs, yum?

I'm just mytsified that my life journey has led me here, and I really have no idea what events led me from filthy barbarian scum to somebody who now thinks "I like the looks of table and chair combination--if I put that lamp on it it'll look REALLY nice."

I'm almost dizzy at the realization!

17. I love IKEA!- but I'm biased.
1. I'm Swedish-American and visited the original IKEA near Stockholm
in 1958.

2. My son works at our Costa Mesa IKEA.

3. I have a very serious IKEA addiction. I cannot go into the store without buying at
least 3 or more items. I rationalize that " they are practical and very affordable".

I buy all my Swedish food at the Swede Shop, where I also buy for my Mom, who
can no longer drive and do her own shopping.

Their $1.99 breakfast includes coffee( Swedish coffee!!) and Svenska pankakor-
Swedish pancakes, bacon and eggs.

During the big Grand Opening, my SO took the car keys from me while we were
at the store, threatening to leave if I didn't stop shopping. Good luck carrying
home 2 1/2 by 5 foot cartons of unassembled bookcases!

It worked, damn it!

The coffee they serve is the coffee they sell.
Swedish coffee is very rich and often very dark roasted.

It's great to see another IKEA fan!

31. *lol* I know a lot of people who love the place; never been there my own
self. I've seen some of their stuff on line and in magazines, and some of it's kind of nice, but most is WAY too modern for my taste, and too matchymatchy.
But kudos to you for discovering that 'style' is not necessarily a bad thing, and here's to your finding your OWN that makes you happy and comfortable and feeling at home :-)

Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 07:33 AM by Bridget Burke
I inherited a bunch of furniture--none of which will ever show up on Antiques Roadshow. And have acquired a bit of this & a bit of that over the years.

My style is far from "matchy matchy"--but IKEA is useful. Bookshelves! Lamps! IKEA's great for the eclectic home, too.

Drop by. I bet you'll find something you need.

Do they carry nifty kitchen gadgets at all? That's one place I don't mind the odd 'modern' bit or piece...

And now, we Texans don't have to drive to Houston anymore for that lovely taste of Swedish goodness! Austin and Dallas have their own IKEAs at last! I used to visit IKEA when we went to Calgary (I get to Calgary more often than I get to Houston if you can believe that!)

I have another new favorite store that I finally got to see in San Diego. They recently built one here in Dallas, but I hadn't made it in yet. It's like Crate and Barrel, but affordable!

And I'm really excited they're opening a CB2 (which is the modern, less pricy version of Crate and Barrel) here in the city, in Soho.

I swear to dog that it took me 45 minutes t get off that second floor and to the exit. My mistake was telling my husband and son about it. Love their stuff - well, some of it - but refuse to go unless I have one of them with me. When I panic and want OUT, I want OUT NOW. IKEA doesn't lend itself to OUT NOW.

39. IKEA frightens me
I went in there a few years ago to buy things for my first dorm. Now, coming from where I come from, one develops a very good sense of direction. It's easy when you know the mountains are always to the west. This way, I know even inside buildings which direction I'm facing, and as long as I get to study a map briefly I can get around someplace no problem afterwards.

IKEA was so expansive and confusing I almost had to be carried out on a stretcher. I walked past the same pile of concept pillows or whatever a dozen times. I had noooo idea where I was going. I can't remember the last time I felt so unsettled. It was like a piece of my psyche had been stripped away. Not good. Not good.

I've sworn off IKEA. Sorry Sweden... at least I still like Saabs!

A place we adapted immediately (we are Scandinavian by descent so maybe that's why).
