3. You can tell
because they use idiotic analogies. If you understand the science, you don't NEED analogies. I understand that they're targeting a non-scientific crowd here, but even so. Clever false analogies do more to destroy logic and reasoning than anything else, imho.

6. abiogenesis is where their complaint is
they sometimes call that 'chemical evolution'. Almost nobody denies change within a species - the moths turning black to match the polluted background, etc.. Speciation is more problematic, especially the jump from animal to human. However, it is the origin of life question where they really draw the line, and why not since any theory of that is unscientific as the beginning of the biology book states - "The hypothesis must be testable" and there is no way to test any hypothesis about a one-time past event.

7. It's not a freaking hypothesis.
Sheesh.

Do we have to test whether or not Jupiter was really going in the other direction until five minutes before humans started looking at it, or not?

No, we don't. We extrapolate from known data. Or, to put it another way, we have every reason to believe it did and none to believe it didn't.

Alert! Accuracy about science Nazi on patrol! :)

23. what is not a hypothesis?
And what does that have to do with Jupiter? Jupiter's movement is not a one-time event. A better example would be Pluto, although I doubt if I am current. There is/was a theory that Pluto was once a moon of Neptune that got thrown out of its orbit by Triton. Okay, now I read that's out of favor, and further read that a theory that the Earth was hit by a perhaps Mars-sized object which caused the moon to break off. How do they test these hypotheses?

The physics of motion is pretty well known, but could a team of physicists come into a pool hall five minutes after a game has been played and reconstruct which balls went into which pockets? How much more daunting then is a planetary sized table in a game which is still going on to project what has happened in the last billion years with anything close to the testability of combining sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid to form salt and water?

57. But that's not what was bieng said by the ID'ers/creationists.
And the idea that life arose from simpler chemicals is a matter of extrapolating from known data, that is, knowing F = gm1m2 / r^2, we can say "the earth has not been going around the sun on a square path until 5 minutes before humans started looking". It's not an earth-round hypothesis.

A hypothesis is something that is used to explain data that cannot be exaplained by current theories and laws. It's not something used to account for history.

(Note: I am talking about the scientific meaning of these words, colloquially these mean quite different things)

Similarly, when it comes to what the idea that we ought to think life could not arise from chemicals, it's plain bullshit. We have no data, at all, that points to anything else so it is plainly irrational to believe anything else. Sheesh.

And FWIW, no-one is claiming to have found the exact biochemical pathway. Sheesh.

There is no problem with speciation, as far as I can see. There's a pretty damn big supply of evidence supporting it. Not to mention that humans ARE animals, there is no "jump," so I don't know where you're going with that.

25. is there evidence to support that there is no jump?
Humans are animals, but humans are also hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, etc. Is there no jump between life and non-life? Is there no jump between plant life and animal life? Do other animals perform surgery, build airplanes, write plays, etc., etc.? Is there not a huge qualitative difference between humans and other animals?

Speciation is more problematic to them, is what I meant.

35. There's a jump between animals now and humans now
but that's not how it was early in our evolutionary path. There was no jump between animals and early hominoids, from them to austrolopithicus, and so on. Human's didn't just up and start creating art; there was a VERY long and gradual path of brain expansion that eventually resulted in the creation of culture, art, etc.

Which is why the ground is made of it to this very day. :eyes:

the fact that no new life forms inside a fresh jar of peanut butter proves to us all that the universe could not have ever developed life forms without help from God.
he doesn't know that tiny stuff is alive inside peanut butter which comes from live plants anyway and that the first ever life ANYWHERE was so small his eyes couldn't have seen it.

from watching that. What the hell? My sister (a born again Christian) gave me a book about all the problems with evolution. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called and I can't find it on Amazon.com. Anyway, because evolution was a part of my research as a grad student, she gave me this book and it was so utterly ridiculous.

There was something I was going to say about the book but I forgot what it was while I was trying to figure out the name of it. Oh well, just proves that video killed some brain cells.

30. How does he know that there wasn't life in there?
Before he opened that jar it could have had little people in there and right before it was opened, they were raptured. Plus, if you notice, the seal has already been pulled back. That means it was opened before he "opened" it. Maybe they let the life out? Or.. maybe he didn't have enough faith that there wouldn't be life in there so he checked before the cameras were rolling. So many unanswered questions....

I have $120 to spend at Barnes and Noble and I didn't want to shell out $30 bucks (although it's $10 cheaper online) if it wasn't a good read so I bought Sam Harris' "End of Faith" instead.
