IMHO, I'm fine with snowmobilers, so long as they ride responsibly and dont do anything stupid.

1. Unfortunately, they are few and far between.
I loved the several times I rode one.

But especially in Northern WI and MN towns, they use them to bar-hop.

And every year they crash into stuff, fall through thin ice, flip over, and simply run out of gas miles from shelter, all while half-schnockered or totally bombed.

9. See, so more people should ride them.... so more people
would die of exposure.... sounds all good to me.

What is the downside?

2. 4x4s
Four by fours..All the snowriders around here grew up, became adults and now drive fancy Fords, Chevrolets, Dodge and so on. A snowmobile has become a rare creature--unless one owns many acres of empty land to ride on. But soon even that becomes boring.

3. I agree, they are fine if they ride by the rules, but so few seem to, or
maybe it's the usual case of the ones who don't being the ones who stand out and give the truly sporting riders a bad name.

4. As long as they are being responsible...no problem.
Sometimes the responsible ones seem few and far between.

5. I think snowmobiles are fine for the lakes and stuff...
but I hate them when they're trail-riding. I see a lot of damaged property because of them, a lot of trespassing, and a lot of people here in MN use them to go bar-hopping, and subsequently, they get into accidents.

I also hate that snomobiles ruin the precious ecosystem around them. A lot of trails here in MN have damaged tree roots and eroded trails that ultimately force the silts and clays from the dirt creep into swamps.

Personally, I would love to see snowmobiles banned. They waste gas anyways. But it's not everybody that drives snowmobiles who do those horrible things. It's only those few who spoil it for the rest of the responsible drivers.

6. they pollute and should be banned from Yellowstone and from frozen lakes
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 07:21 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
the exhaust pollutes the snow and when it thaws it melts into the lakes and it pollutes the water and ecosystem by me...they are a horrible noise nuisance too...i led a successful fight to have them banned in my neck of the woods and lakes ...too many damaged the trees, wildlife habitat and private property too ....my argument: motorized boats and ATV/motorbikes are forbidden on these lands and lakes so also should snowmobiles be forbidden. :7

7. My confused, self serving, slightly hypocritical take...
...on 'em is as a snow shoer and cross country skier they irritate the hell out of me.

However they give you a hell of a testosterone rush and are fun to ride.
