Talking Out Loud While Cooking
It might be a carry-over from computer programming, but I talk out loud as I cook. It's like having my own cooking show! It helps me focus on what I'm doing, like chopping things.

When I don't know what I'm going to cook I start with an onion. I hold it up to present it to the world, and proclaim: "Everything starts with an onion." You can add a chopped onion to just about anything. Except ice cream. When I die, I want people to say: Here lies a good onion chopper.

The running patter is very important. When I pick up a piece of meat, I praise it for its appealing qualities. "Yes, a very good piece of meat. Indeed, an excellent piece of meat."

1. Not so strange
I do, too. I may not hold the onion up (I am partial to mushrooms), but I definitely have a running commentary going (to myself) while cooking. Occasionally, I even let a "BAM" escape!

Wait until I tell my husband that I am not the only one who does this. Thanks, it is nice to know I am not alone. :hi:

2. well, it depends
if I'm following a recipie, I just mutter instructions to myself, but if I'm making it up as I go along, then I can carry on long discussions with myself about what to do next. quite disturbing for my friends.

4. Yes but not only do I talk to myself
I talk to the cats. One of my cats loves to watch me cook and will jump onto my shoulder. He's big so then I have to support his rear end with my hand, so I'm always saying "oh Pad Thai!" as I'm cooking. (Not the dish, that's the cat's name). I must be the best one armed cook in Arlington. I make him get back on top of the refridgerator when I have to do something two-handed.

5. I name cats after foods too
Among my cats, past and present are Couscous and Tofu. I'm waiting for the arrival of "Tandoori"

6. You don't talk to your ingredients directly?
I believe that talking about your ingredients in the third person is like talking about children in the third person. It makes them feel self-conscious and insecure.

Food should be addressed directly. I speak to my meat: "Now what would be best to do with you?" I open my spice rack: "Okay, I want you and you and you and you." I talk to my pots and my utensils: "Oops, you're a little too hot, aren't you." I even apologize to them at times: "Oh, did I put you in the washer without cleaning you off properly? I'm sorry. Here, let me get rid of that nasty stain for you."

It's the little niceties that make for a happy kitchen.

7. well sure, that's a great idea
if you want your spices, pots, pans and ingredients to run your kitchen. That ain't love, love is having high expectations for them and making sure they achieve them. spare the rod and all that.
