2. I think some people have this weird thing
where in all girls sound the same, and cancel out any music going on in the background.

8. I really didn't expect it.
To me, they sound completely different except for two minor things:
1.Emily Haines and Courtney Love are both women. They sound totally different, but they are both identifiably female.
2. They both have guitar, bass, and drums. Metric also has other instruments, but those three are common to both.

Those two things still don't make them sound the same to me, they're just common factors. When I hear Hole, I hear screechy grungeish 90s alternarock. When I hear Metric I hear generally quieter current indie type rock with some new wave influence.

Hole used guitars very very prominently in their tracks. It's generally the first thing you notice. Second thing is that Courtney Love's voice is somewhat grating and she's trying to play that up.
Metric, excluding Monster Hospital and a couple of others, rely more heavily on bass, drums, and synth for their sound. The first thing I notice tends to be their drums followed by the synth. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=sRxAv3xNdbo) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=uRopPJDZSig).
Also, if it wasn't totally apparent already that Emily Haines sounds NOTHING like Courtney Love, I suggest this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yM5kCRrZ2ZE&mode=related&search=

9. Sure-
if you're smoking that bad batch of crack that's been in circulation lately.

I'd say that it would make anything sound the same.

:D

I would like to know why people do think they sound the same though. I don't care if they don't like bands I like, but I really would like to know.

11. It's because they took the brown acid.
Actually, it's because some people are idiots.

The style of the two bands sound nothing alike and neither does the singing. Courtney Love screeches.

I need to look up an old sight for you sometime. It's all about how Courtney Love killed the nineties by sleeping w/ or fighting w/ everyone. It's really funny and makes quite a bit of sense.

15. Give me some time.
I think it was on either a sight having to do w/ Kurt Cobain or one w/ Trent Reznor.

Anyway, it's funny.

And just for laughs-Callie plans on wearing her pirate outfit for Earth Day this year. She says that pirates, compared to the "Army guys" (remember, I live in a military town), never did anything to hurt the planet.

Sometimes I wonder if she's smoking baby crack in her public school restroom.

16. I have a few Metric songs on my computer.
Not fan-level devotion, but I like them. I neither like nor hate Hole, but on the, uh, whole, I'd take L7 over them.

:)

If I had to pick one band with a girl singer Metric has at one point reminded my vaguely of, it'd probably be Bow Wow Wow (think Aphrodisiac not I Want Candy)

Edit:
They don't sound the same. Just a vague resemblance in a couple of songs that triggered memories.

24. I could see/hear that
although Metric sounds a bit more modern based on the few songs I've heard. I like them though.

I can understand when people confuse bands that sort of sound similar, like No Doubt and Save Ferris. While I personally think Monique Powell has a better voice, the similarity in genre is understandable.

My sister in law is a singer for the punk band The Messengers, and she gets tired of most of the "you sound like ____", unless it's the Avengers, which she can sort of see and agree with.

http://www.themessengers.cc/

As a musician, I know it happens and I too have heard some amusing ones; not always an insult, but surprising sometimes. "You guys sound like old Janes Addicition doing Minutemen songs wth David Byrne singing" - uh... ok. That's fair, I guess. The strangest one I got was from some completely wasted guy who was convinced we were a Greatful Dead cover band, and then wanted to fight me when I said I hated the Dead and finally convinced him he was wrong. ha!

18. They do not.
That is my correct assessment.

And I know what you mean - when I was in an instrumental rock band, we'd incessantly get compared to other instrumental rock bands that we sounded nothing like. Some people's ears just can't get beyond "chick band."

No. Courtney Love's voice isn't nearly as good. Hole's music doesn't have the musical nuance or lyrical cleverness of Metric.

It just occurred to me that if you want to compare metric to a 90's band, I think they're more like a slightly less angry Rage Against the Machine with a female vocalist. I'd love to see some combination of people from the two bands get together and do something.

Hole is a little closer with their Celebrity Skin sound, yet their voices are completely different. Metric reminds me of Garbage meets Blondie, while Hole has the early to mid 90s grunge sound. I love both bands, but Emily's solo CD disappointed me. Taken song by song, it's not bad, but it drones over a whole CD.
