I spanked a soldier today

Actually, patted him on the back a few times, but that's not as close a copycat thread title. He was a strapping young dude, almost as tall as me -- 82nd Airborne, All American. Very nice.

I meet a lot of military here -- my work partner usually thanks them for their service (he was Army, in Vietnam) but I also make sure to spend some time talking with them, no matter how many other people are crowding for attention, and wish them well. A while back we had tons of Marines coming through here -- there wer ebig events here in Vegas around the USMC's centennial -- and they included some of the most polite and decent people of their age range that I have ever met in this country.

I always hate hearing that these young men and women are going back to Iraq (at this point most are not shipping out there for the first time but are returning) and I just hope that they somehow stay safe over there. That they are being sacrificed for an illegal and unnecessary conflict that benefits only rich American fatcats and their allies is infuriating -- perhaps by now most Americans really do want the US out of Iraq, but I'd settle just for these young Americans (and, for that matter, the older ones getting re-upped when they've already done more than their share of military service) coming back healthy and sane.

I'm sure they appreciate you and your partner's attention very much. A last little taste of home before embarking on another tour...not knowing if they'll ever be back.

I am very concerned about the physical, and especially psychological, state of the soldiers not only now, but when (IF) they are finally returned home for good...

If BushCo isn't serious about helping those back in the US now, what happens when they come back in great numbers? How long will they have to wait for treatment? Will they get any at all, or be completely ignored? :-(
