What makes certain celebrities Icons to the Gay Community
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 04:39 PM by LynneSin
I was always fasinated about how some celebrities like Cher, Dolly Parton, Judy Garland, Barbara Streisand, Debbie Reynolds, et al have major fanbases in the GLBT community. Mind you, I think all of these women are very talented but I'm just curious - what elevates an average everyday celebrity into an icon of the GLBT community?

1. My observations:
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 05:13 PM by JackBeck
They're either over the top in appearance or costume, where they become completely campy.

Strong women who have no problem speaking their mind, and we likey that.

They don't come from DelEware.

They're tragic and sad, and when the world has given-up on them, we will always be there to cheer for their success.

I'm sure there are other reasons and I'll let your question sink in some more and see what I come up with.

3. When it wasn't popular to do so, they spoke directly to our community.
Madonna was one of the first video artists that coyly played with including homoerotic images on her videos.

22. Oh, God!
I remember being obsessed with her live show where she was a mermaid in a wheelchair. HBO would show it all the time when I was a kid. And they say the gay isn't genetic.

6. It usually begins when they like us first
not necessarily the other way around.

The Madonna example above is a great one.

And bitchin' costumes help, too.

10. Although I'm not sure that Debbie Reynolds is a gay icon.
Sort of like saying June Allyson was a gay icon.

I'd suggest Elizabeth Taylor, instead.

But then, what do I know? I'm just gay and all.

13. Agreed
Debbie Reynolds is pretty campy, but not much of an icon.

16. As a major supporter but not a participator I might need some correction
on who the true icons of the Gay Community might be.

Come on - I'm a Led Zeppelin fan - what the hell do I know?

8. I love Dolly & Judy.
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 04:54 PM by Dr Fate
Dolly's output up until the mid-70's was stellar.

Judy's voice makes me tear up. Wizard of Oz is pretty much the coolest movie, like EVER.

It's funny- if you admit you like musicals or Judy Garland, eye-brows are always raised. I'm not gay, but I just love good music and great singers/performers.

26. And movies! There are some movies that are revered in the gay community
I wanna know what is up with The Wizard of Oz? Every single gay pride parade features at least 10 Dorothy's!

27. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".
So many gay men can relate to that song (especially back then) and the desire to be somewhere where they can be themselves and everything is idyllic with no judgments.
