I have to leave my computer on all night.
I hate the idea. I am a bit of a pyrophobic, sort of. I mean I've left it on by accident before, but never knowingly. I was filling out a very important application for a relative and it (high tech language for the program) wouldn't let us schedule an interview appointment...and I was afraid to log off, and it was too late to contact HR. This is a very important and much needed opportunity for a single mom so I'm leaving the screen right where it is and just closing the laptop and leaving the computer downstairs running.

Unless...computer techies of DU, if I shut the notebook with the screen still up, and then shut off the main computer downstairs and router as well, will the connection be broken so that I won't be able to use the screen that is left up when I boot up again tomorrow morning? Does any of this make any sense???

1. Yes
you will lose the connection. But leaving it unattended all night may well also break the connection, depending on the nature of the site on which you're filling out the application - a lot of sites have time-outs.

But leave it all on and see in the morning - there's really no danger from leaving a computer on.

3. DON'T shut down the router.
I have a laptop and a main computer and a router connected to my cable modem. At the moment I am typing on the laptop and the main comp is off. I usually shut down all my windows on the laptop but leave it up; sometimes I leave a program running. It's usually ok to leave that up as long as your laptop is in good shape and is running well. Also make sure your antivirus is up and running alongside all night.

YOu should be ok.

4. I leave my computer on almost every night.
Shutting off the other computer shouldn't be a problem, it's shutting off the router that'll cause you to lose the connection.
