What does your DU username mean?
or it's relevance/significance to you?

Mine? Rockit is one of my all time favorite songs.

It's by Herbie Hancock, and featured one of the first mainstream uses of "scratching" (beginnings of turntableism.) Featuring Grandmixer on the turntables. It blew my mind the first time I heard it and it still rocks.

I started college in fall of that year, and I found out just how much I love this genre of music. I saw lots of great obscure bands back then, and to date, it's still my favorite music. :)

often encountered in the context of a "kama'aina discount", really a sneaky way to charge visitors extra while giving us the fair price as a "discount".

Ironically, I had been here less than a year when I joined DU; I figured that, since there were (and still are) very few other DUers out here, I would arrogate the name to myself.

33. It's a Maine thing.
Gormy means awkward in a hapless, bull in a china shop way.
Simplest way to describe it is to quote John Gould, author of 'Maine Lingo':

"Ain't he the boy broke your plow, smashed your cart, lost the forty-quart can down the well, and got your Edie in a family way?"

"Ayeh."

"Gormy cuss, ain't he?"

My SN is based on a conversation I had with a former co-worker.

Also, I love coffee, plus I'm a contradiction in many ways.

I was playing at a small club w/ the band I was in at the time; between sets, I overheard a convo between the bass player and a woman he was seriously crushing on. My name came up and the woman said "_____ is kinda cute! And he's so enigmatic!", which just cracked the bass player up to no end. From then on, everytime we played out he would always introduce me onstage as "Here's _______, he's sooooooooooo enigmatic!!", as I turned 69 shades of red. He was a good guy though, and I couldn't complain since I was using his amps:D

From Amazon.com:

Reviewer: Darrel
This beautiful book is a lasting testament to the failed pregnancy of a simple and poetic couple. A thin book, but as profound as it is brief. It's the kind of book that makes you want to force it into a friend's hand and watch his/her face as they silently read it. I can't imagine a more moving account or a more glistening example of bravery than this.

...

I read it when I was fifteen. I used to borrow my Mom's copies of Redbook magazine, back when the published original short fiction, because I wanted to be a writer. It helped me understand my Mother's sadness when my youngest sister was stillborn. How I miss Redbook's short fiction. It helped me understand the world, and be more sensitive to others.

my spouse and I adopted a female dog that had abusive owners. She was tied to a tree and I think other dogs were allowed to attack her.

Her full name is Maddison....she had extreme leash agression issues. We took her to one of the best dog trainers in our area and she has gotten much better, not perfect but better. We will always have to be vigilant with her when around other dogs. We know her well enough to recognize the twitch in her eye and the bristle along her upper back to know when she is getting ready to have an episode. (Part Rhodesian Ridgeback)

She is a wonderful dog and she gets along famously with my pit/sharpee mix. The two of them are usually grooming each other or passing gas....

In a conversation with a favorite (now late) Duer, we found had the same initials and state tag - and had he used the same logic in finding a DU name that we would have the same nic. ( :toast: to kephera in spirit) Funny that after we found that connection we also laughed about our non-gendered names and how many folks assumed gender (the wrong gender) based on the nick. He had many folks respond to him as "She said..." and I had many responses refering to me as a "he."

Not the topic - but a moment to toast and remember Keph. Anyone who actually reads this is welcomed to join me in this nonsequitor nod to Keph's memory.

152. Mine actually has 2 meanings:
1. The conservative movement was gaining so much power and and the country was moving so far to the right that views that used to be considered moderate were now being "pushed to the left".

2. My political transformation. The right wing was becoming so radical, prejudiced, anti-freedom, and divisive that I made a decision to end my days as a moderate/bipartisan "swing voter" and to start supporting liberal candidates, causes, and organizations. The straw that broke the camel's back was the Lawrence vs. Texas case. I have always believed that what goes on in the bedroom between 2 consenting adults is not the government's business. I have also always been bothered by all types of bigotry. I was glad to hear that the archaic "sodomy laws" had been knocked out. Then I heard Antonin Scalia yelling about a "culture war" in his dissent. I noticed that the 3 Justices that voted to maintain the sodomy laws were considered the conservatives of the Court. Then, to top it off, I heard the right wing reaction: Angry people from the religious right, angry right wing hosts, etc. acting like murder had just been legalized. I couldn't believe these people were outraged that Americans would no longer be arrested for consensual sex in their own homes! Add to that the venom that the right wing let out towards gay people after this case, and you have the right wing basically exposing their true colors: Pro-bigotry and anti-freedom. That's the day I began to become a hardcore liberal, and I have become more liberal every year. I'm probably twice as liberal now as I was when I joined DU!

154. "derby" is a fleshing-out of my own initials, and "378" is...
...taken from the name of a song by Emergency Broadcast Network that always struck my fancy, even if no one else ever heard it.

And there you have it, folks, at long last. :hi:

162. Oh, yeah. About that...
It was taken from the ultra-violent Milk & Cheese comic series by Evan Dorkin, who also co-wrote some episodes of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and a few other comics.

I need to dig that image out again, especially with Rove and Miers being subpoenaed by Congress. That graphic is simply too much fun. Thanks for the reminder! :hi:

of an infamous right wing talk show. Now if it comes on the radio, I rush to change stations.

Buried 5,000 feet down and still raised the surface by 25 feet. The largest underground test. Deemed far too large for the Nevada test site. Registered 6.8 on the richtor scale, with after shocks as large as 4.0 for 30 days after the blast. It is supposed to be the main motivating factor in the founding of Greenpeace.

165. Now deceased member of the famous punk band...
THE MINUTEMEN!

They were musically innovative, mixing jazz and funk with punk rock

They were political

They were fron San Pedro, California and so am I. If I had gone to the local public high school, I would have been 2 years ahead of them.
