A bit of a rant about...Music
As you may have guessed by my nickname, I am a huge fan of the genre known as Blues Music. But I like a lot of music, as I grew up in a musical household. Heck, my dad used to play Hank Williams in bars for beers, before he was married and my mom always encouraged a musical and cultural education. But that is not the subject of my rant today.
I was talking to a friend of mine recently and he was talking about a show he saw recently where Alice Cooper was the headliner (yeah he's still out there), and a guy named Anthony Gomes was the opener. My friend said he couldn't figure out what Gomes played because he has a bit of a hard edge to his music and does a preacher thing during his shows as well. I asked him why even try and classify it, just listen and enjoy. See, if it sounds good to your ears, then it's good. I own recordings by many many artists including, but certainly nor limited to, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Metallica, Ronnie James Dio, Green Day, even Ted Nugent, etc. I think maybe you get the idea. Just listen to the music, and if you like it, buy it. Do not go into it with preconcieved notions. I admit, I have been guilty of that in the past, and likely will be again, but darn it, I just like music and admire those who have the talent and patience to perform it, regardless of what genre we may classify it. The end. Thank you for reading this babbling crap.

1. Maybe he was
trying to put a label on it to better describe it to you or others who might not have heard of him?

2. I am very familiar with Gomes
I have not only seen him perform, but have gotten fairly drunk with him. I like his music, it is about peace. Check out his latest cd, "Music is the Medicine". Especially the song, "War on War".

5. Your familiarity
with said artist was not conveyed in the OP so I was taking a shot at a possible explanation.

3. I'm always leery of people who make blanket statements

"I don't like country music" or "I don't like jazz."

I think people who truly appreciate what music is can find selections from about any genre that they can appreciate. Maybe not all of it, maybe not most of it, but it's always seemed to me the artists who I most admire have taken elements of many kinds of music to form what they play. They may play mostly rock (which is what I mostly listen to) but you can hear other influences throughout.

Especially on long car journeys, I like to fiddle with the dial and just see what's out there. I sometimes stop on a classical channel, or a Mexican channel or a new wave type of channel or whatever catches my attention. I enjoy hearing other sounds so I think I understand what you're saying.

4. I totally get what you're saying
unfortunately, and around DU specifically, the judgments many make based on "preconceived notions" happens all too often....and not just in matters pertaining to music, either. That's my experience, anyway.

:eyes:

People get REALLY attached to their opinions....
