fashion advice sought: so i bought these sweet shoes
they look roughly like this:

$42 @ DSW. why not?

i reluctantly wore them to work today (big dinner out tonight), anticipating the shit i was going to catch from certain uptight white guys. but i figured, hell, either i'm going to wear them to work or i'm never going to wear them.

sure enough, the first guy i see in the kitchen starts telling me i look like tom jones (i have sandy brown hair & i'm irish/german). or a pimp. i told him there isn't a woman in this office (100 or so) who won't like these shoes. he asks the next woman to come in the kitchen, and she replies "they're fabulous".

as a straight guy, let me ask: what the fuck is it with straight guys & fashion?

1. My straight husband is fashion-conscious.
Not trendy, but very "look" savvy.

You tell your weenie coworkers that the cock with the brightest plumage attracts the best hens.

2. A lot of guys seem to think that it's not masculine to care how you look
Which makes absolutely no sense to me.

28. A lotta straight guys spend lonely weekend nights at home, bitching about how "gay"
good-looking male celebrities and personal friends secretly are.

My hubby is straight but looks great. Style-conscious, but not flashy. I'm dead crazy about him!

3. Well, I am not sure! I dress my husband basically since I buy
all of his clothes. But he likes my taste and he thinks I pick out better stuff than he would. However, I would never buy him those shoes. No offense but they are pretty ugly! But that is only my opinion, and I think if you like them, then who gives a f*ck what others think! WEar them just to piss them off!

4. Okay, I'm a straight guy, and am hardly an arbiter of fashion...

But those are pretty ugly.

But hey, it's probably more important what women you know think than what some random dude on the internet thinks.

7. I was gonna say hideous, but it seemed a little harsh, haha.
But then, it's coming from a guy who wears these:

I don't know shit about fancy shoes, haha.

8. I'm a straight guy and I can tell you that to some, shoes are invisible.
Unless they have a curled up toe with a bell on the end, I will never notice a pair of shoes.

...on a man OR a woman.

10. Same here, Richardo.
I almost never notice shoes, especially on men. I might notice a woman's if they're exceptionally high-heeled, but beyond that - they don't even get on my radar.

11. I always notice shoes on a guy.
If they are suited up, those shoes better be polished.

And, yes, I am a pin butted Yankee. (Just ask my husband)

I go for a little more staid look in my dress clothes but I like those. I hate the elf shoe look of a lot of newer mens shoes

necessary schooling to have fashion sense. Especially those of us brought up in the 50's & 60's. And you have to admit that there were a lot of really crap clothes out there for men.

Added on edit: And I know some gay guys my age who dress like uptight bankers as well.

I'm not loving those shoes for myself, but with the right trousers, and shirt and jacket, they probably are pretty kickin'. I'm thinking black trousers with a subtle pin stripe not too wide or really good jeans, and a good shirt or sweater, in a color that picks up on the shoes.

I wear Eccos or Doc Martens most of the time and they're pretty stylish.

19. Because it's safe to wear what everyone else wears, no imagination required.
If you know what you like and wear it, you seem confident, and that's cool... much more fun than the same old same old.
Have fun at your dinner out tonight!

20. I wouldn't have chosen them, but

good for you for doing so and for wearing them proudly. I am just not a fan of most men's shoes (running shoes and other more practical types aside, of course) and find most men's dress shoes to be absolutely hideous, especially the kinds so prevalent in the US. I tend to favor pretty plain shoes, if I have to have them...when I was active in my scientific career the brown walker-style shoes that go so well with Dockers and the like were pretty standard as my fancy footwear (in my career field, sneakers and sandals -- wetsuit booties, more often than not -- were de rigeur) and I found a pair of basic black nubuck shoes that I liked for their simple style and extreme comfort.

Now I wear them as a necessary part of the look -- impersonating Elvis, doncha know -- but if I can't wear my trusty New Balance off-road running shoes I really do like the look and feel of these styles of classic Italian dress boots (the Beatles/Elvis boot):

24. thanks for all the opinions
i still don't get the uptightness.

they're not what i'd wear to a meeting with a client, but WTF, its friday, and i'm a design professional.

here's what guys typically wear here: company polo shirts, pleated dockers, and something practical from payless. ugh.
