Mia Zapata was an awesome performer....RIP
Too bad some scumbag had to rape and murder her when she was so young...

This video doesn't have the best sound quality, but it's my favorite Gits song...

Second Skin

I've thought about it a million times
It takes all my strength just to keep it calm
I hove to tell myself, just let it breathe
holding it inside will only help to do me in
Each time I close my eyes I see another chain
it's one I can't forget, something I can not break out of
I need a second skin, something to hold me up
can't seem to get out of this hole
I've dug myself right back in
Just to wake up tells me I must be brave
It hits me like a drug shot into my vein
It's not as delightful of a pain
immobilizing me
almost makes me think I'm dead
I need a second skin
something to hold me tough
Can't do it on my own
sometimes I need just a little more help
I want that chance to give every drop that's left in me
I need a second skin
something I can not break out of
I tell myself, just let it breathe
It's a calmness I'm always searching for
But the dirt it gets so heavy
it falls above my head
seeping from under my feet
it just keeps on getting deeper
I need a second skin
something to hold me tough
Can't do it on my own
sometimes I need just a little more help
I've got that chance to give every drop that's left in me
I need a second skin
something I cannot break free of
Though no one ever said it'd be easy
Still one's left to deny the choice that comes
between your willingness to survive
Though you're knowing what you stand up against
a world set to deceive
You need a special strength
I've got that second skin
I've got that chance to give
I've got the only way that I know how to live with it
I need a second skin
something to hold me tough
I need a second skin
something I cannot break out of

1. Yes, she was.
The Gits are one of my favorite bands from Seattle from that era and I was lucky to see them many times. RIP, Mia. :(

She was very talented. I believe they finally charged someone with her death. So sad.

4. He was caught in the Florida Keys a few years ago
Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 08:10 PM by Awsi Dooger
A Hispanic guy. A DNA match led to him, based on saliva left on her body. Other evidence placed him in Seattle at the time.

I post on an Unsolved Mysteries forum and we followed that case closely, since the program had done a segment on her murder.

5. He was convicted, sentenced to 36 yrs
They kept her body in cold storage until the technology was available to do the testing. He was caught for robbery, and his DNA went into the bank, he was convicted in 2002. And that makes me very, very happy :)

16. thank you...it makes me sad and happy
Happy to see her so full of life and energy, such an honorable woman...So sad though, to know that her life was snuffed out so soon after with her own sweatshirt lace...It really makes me hate people when I think of things like this...sigh.

But yes, she did, and that's how I will always remember her. :)

18. You're very welcome...
She just blows me away, watching her...And I don't want anyone to forget her, or what was done to her. I can't explain it, but it makes me really angry, this case in particular.

So, to soothe my tumultuous soul, I ordered 2 Gits cds on Amazon tonight. And I think I'll order the black Gits sweatshirt that she was wearing when she died, and that all her friends wore at the trial of her murderer.

Retail therapy, literally. :)

22. Just crushing to think of where she could've gone, where she'd already been...
I went to college with her. I knew her a little bit, not very well...saw the Snivelling Little Rat-Faced Gits, as they were called at the time, a lot. She was always just amazing, you knew that voice would be HEARD.

Tiny school, very tight-knit; there was such a shock and horror and grief wave among the alums that awful summer everywhere we'd scattered to, not just in Seattle.

24. I still think about her all the time.
 Thanks.

There were a lot of us in Chicago, so we felt it bigtime. One positive thing that did come out of it was a lot of increased awareness about women's safety and self-defense, people taking more time to make sure all their friends got home OK, etcetera. Tough, smart bunch of women into music, live poetry, theater, etc; definitely NOT the type to budge an inch on their dreams just because "good girls" don't go out late or else they're "asking for it". We honor Mia's memory by being strong, not by being fearful. And courage isn't the lack of fear--it's feeling the fear and going through it to come out the other side.
