"Garrison Keillor: A Prairie Homophobic Companion?"

....

In an article titled "Stating the Obvious" in salon.com, the Minnesota author wrote, "The country has come to accept stereotypical gay men -- sardonic fellows with fussy hair who live in over-decorated apartments with a striped sofa and a small weird dog and who worship campy performers and go in for flamboyance now and then themselves. If they want to be accepted as then themselves. If they want to be accepted as couples and daddies, however, the flamboyance may have to be brought under control. Parents are supposed to stand in back and not wear chartreuse pants and black polka-dot shirts." Apparently, Keillor's research consisted entirely of watching a Netflix copy of "The Birdcage" and reruns of "Queer Eye".

1. From my knowledge of Keilor, that is a bit surprising.

Was it satire or was that straight-forward commentary?

Edited to add that I am unable to get the story to open for me.

6. TMZ fucked up on this one.
They evidently know nothing about Garrison Keillor. If you want to see what's going on, look at the comments--the bigots are exposed, and that's what's so funny about the whole thing.

The beauty of satire...seems lost on some people.

16. Yes, Keillor is a master at satire.
His comments were completely satirical, I'm surprised more people don't get that.

4. Garrison Keillor is the master of satire.
And that's what this is. He's satirizing the language of bigots, and the bigots are being played for fools.

9. I got my day pass and read the whole thing at salon.
I don't think Garrison is picking on gays.
He's a humorist and a sentimentalist and a nostalgist (is that a word?) too.
And I think damned good at all of them.

He's just contrasting (and poking some fun at) at how complicated families have become since he was a kid and he brings up some things to think about.

Most of the article is about studies the government lays out big bucks for to get information he already has and will impart for considerably less.

I'm sure he will take some heat over this excerpt, but he's still one of my heroes.

10. Mine too! I listen to FM 88.9 every Saturday night.
Actually, I listen all day Saturday, for shows like Car Talk and What Do You Know.

Saturdays are fun on public radio!

if there's a follow up.

it sounds like he's calling out some folks -- but i'll withhold judgement for now.

12. I think maybe he's poking fun of the stereotype?
And also poking fun at people who stand in the back, and don't wear interesting clothes?

15. Total satire.
If anyone ever listens to his actual program and knows his distinctive inflections and emphasis, there can be no question that this is satire.
