Say hello to Sheba, our new flame point Siamese.
Just when we thought we had enough kitties.

We saw her at Petsmart a few Saturdays ago when we went in for kitty litter. (It's VERY dangerous to go to Petsmart on weekends!) She's fitting well into the household. The boys especially like her. She's as sweet as can be. She's sitting in her little bed on the sofa next to me right now, watching TV.

:loveya:

And, yes, the sofa is leather. But we got the tough kind, just in case. :D

Good to see you, Wesley! We don't seem to be on much at the same time these days.

20. LOL!
I was visiting the local botanical garden yesterday (I posted some pics in the Photography group), and there were two kittens following me all around: A reddish boy and a black one (couldn't see the gender.) Unbelievable friendly with everyone. And every time I tried to take a shot, they aimed straight at me for more strokes. I managed this one, though, but it isn't sharp:

I'm a bit rare, lately. Major business stuff. :)

28. I was there with my mom,
and before I helped her getting some garden trash away, which she likes very much to stuff into plastic bags. And plastic bags seem to be the best thing to be marked by either some stray cats around here or her cats. So I guess, when she was handling them, her pants got in contact with it.

This cat was all over my mom's pants - looks like ecstasy:

If so, you've most likely got an exceptional cat there. I have a tabby-siamese mix, and they are remarkably smart and have great personalities (not that all cats aren't and don't, but there's something about that cross that produces REALLY great cats).

I adopted mine 12 years ago, and if I ever get another cat, I'll go out of my way to look for another tabby-siamese to adopt.

11. That's the way
the colorpoint shorthairs look. Some of them even have tortoise shell points. I'm guessing that they made them by crossing Siamese and tabbies of different sorts.

We had a blue-point Siamese several years ago and he was a wonderful kitty. Our new kitty family is wonderful, too ... they're just all so different! :loveya:

I like having a variety. We have two Abyssinians, a Maine Coon, a Russian Blue, and a long-haired tuxedo kitty now, in addition to Sheba. I was going to get another blue point Siamese when Sesame died (he was 19 years and 3 months old and we had him since he was 5 weeks old), but I somehow couldn't get myself to do it. I was afraid I wouldn't be fair to the new kitty if he/she looked too much like the other one who had been my friend for so long. Funny how our brains work. :D

I love the flame points. I had a flame point himmie kitten swipe at me and knock my glasses across the room once at a kennel I worked at. My Dad has a white cat who is flame point, just barely. They really are some of the most attractive cats. If it weren't for the orange points on my Dad's cat he probably would be deaf. Hugs to you and your new kitty.

Edited on Wed Mar-14-07 06:49 PM by AZBlue
She obviously subscribes to the theory that you can never have too many new playmates!

Speaking of which...I have to ask you a question, seeing that you've had some experience in this: I want to get a playmate for my 2 1/2 year old cat and I've never had more than one cat. My vet and the lady at the humane society both told me to keep them separated for a week or two, letting them sniff each other under the door, then swapping places for another week or two, etc, etc...a very long and complicated process that I wouldn't be able to do since I live in a 1 bd apt. So...when you adopted someone new, did you separate them for a while or just cautiously introduce them to each other and let them get a feel for each other? I was thinking about taking time from work to stay with them both to make sure they got along, but I don't think I can go through the whole separate-rooms-for-weeks plan! Just curious what worked for you since you've obviously had success! Thanks!!

50. She tells a different story.
The people here never pet her or play with her. She's wasting away to nothing because she never gets fed. It's a terrible life.

We put the new one in a dog cage with her own kitty box, bed, and food/water dishes ... right in the middle of the living room. That way, they can see, sniff, and touch each other without being threatened. The other advantage is that they're not sharing a kitty box. Many pets that come from shelters have worms (or worse) and you want to make sure they're free of whatever could be wrong before you start letting them share kitty boxes. Sheba gets along with everyone at this point, so we do let her out most of the time. But she had worms, so we put her in when we have to be away from the house. She sleeps with us at night with the door closed. (They don't seem to have to use the box at night in our house.) During the day, Sheba has gotten so that she sits in front of the cage when she has to go potty. And she runs to it when it's time to eat. We got her one of those round cuddle beds and she just loves it. Sylvester (our Maine Coon) loves her so much that he lies down and reaches into the cage just so he can touch her. :loveya:

75. Yeah, I was thinking of something like that too. Using a carrier instead maybe - or maybe I'll go
get a cage. Thanks for the advice - the other way just seemed to be a bit much to me.

All your little ones sound so wonderful - and I'm sure that's because they are well-loved and taken care of! Maine Coons are wonderful - my cat, Maggie, is part Maine Coon and I just think they have the sweetest personalities!

What a wonderful little family you have!!!

81. Don't buy a cage ...
not yet. Call your local rescue groups and see if you can borrow one. That's what we did. They have plenty of them.

A carrier isn't big enough for a bed, a kitty box, and the food/water dished. It needs to be like a little apartment for the kitty.

Our Maine Coon was a throw-away. :( He's ben abandoned twice. But we found him and promised never to abandon him. He's very appreciative. :loveya:

67. I suppose.
But once we move, we'll have a baker's dozen between the indoor cats, the barn cats, and the dogs. Of course, we'd have a hard time turning any of them away. :P

I have a very good friend who does the same thing. It's very frustrating. This is our second one from Petsmart. We have others that we just found or someone gave them away. We're more than happy to have them. :loveya:

And the face, adorable.

I adopted Mr. Picasso from them last year. A wonderful loving cat. They do great things for homeless pets.

83. What an adorable baby!
:loveya: He sort of looks like our Sashka ... only Sashka doesn't have the stripes. I have a good friend in CA who does a lot of pet adoptions at Petsmart. It's a tough, heartbreaking job. When someone finally comes in to adopt a pet, and IF they pass the screening, she sweats bullets for weeks waiting to see if they're going to return the pet. (Sometimes people get through even with the best screening.)

Sashka didn't come from Petsmart. Someone just didn't want her. But we did! :bounce:

This one, Sophie, came from Petsmart. We've had her for almost 10 years. :loveya:

88. My big guy had been returned twice before he found me
He is a biter, but they are love bites, and if you never had a cat that did that, it would upset you. So my guy was returned until one day I was going home from work and that little angel on my shoulder told me to go to PetSmart. Filled out the application on Friday, I picked him up on Sunday because my Vet gave me a great reference.

Only my Lab didn't come from a shelter. He came from an abusive family.

Be well.

94. Beautiful cats. Was it hard to put those claw thingies on Sashka?
I was considering buying those for my Tommy.

Any tips on how to best put them on?

97. Depends on the kitty.
Sashka doesn't like to have her paws handled, so it was a little tricky. Sabrina was a lot easier.

Here she is.

Trim the claws before you put the tips on, but not too short or you won't have anything to stick them to. And don't get tips that are too big. That might take some trial and error. Sashka's first set was too big, even though we went by the chart. Sabrina's a smaller kitty, but they ended up wearing the same size tips. Oh, and I always hold my cats in my lap like a baby while I'm doing their claws. If they give me trouble, I wrap them in a towel and pull each paw out as I need it.

Hope that helps.

105. Great. Thanks for the tips. I'll try it with him.
I already clip his claws once in a while. He doesn't like it but he doesn't get wild and mean. Hopefully, it will save some of our furniture. He has those card board scratchers and is using them. However, our couch seems to be more attractive.

www.topcatproducts.com. Our cats LOVE it ... much better than they ever liked a cardboard scratcher. It's worth every dime.

:hi: :loveya:

Sorry I didn't get here in time to see you this morning.

She is really a doll. And, yes, she is a very meticulous groomer. She eats what we give her, which is a big accomplishment because she had never had anything except dry food before. Took 1 1/2 days to switch her to raw. :wow: Her fur should start to look and feel even better now! :bounce:

We're one big happy family here. And we'll be happier once we get moved and get the rest of the gang! :bounce:

87. Well, she WAS.
She sat on my lap on the way home and every time I sat down for the first three days. Then she got to know the others and spends all her time playing with them. She will sit in the little bed we have on the sofa when we're in here, though. And she sleeps right up against me.

Sophie's the lap kitty around here. She's weighing down my left arm at the moment. :loveya:
