1. Do you have a landlord?
And, if so, shouldn't you be reporting him to the Board of Health?

4. Be careful with the oven, hon...
Is it gas or electric? Make sure you turn off the gas before you go to sleep. Don't you have anyone you could stay with?

Years ago, when I lived in Baltimore, a blizzard crippled the city, and curfews were put in place because some @$$holes started looting downtown. Unfortunately, our building ran out of heating oil at about the same time. I did exactly what you're doing now; but I baked brownies and made hot chocolate while I was there.

I'll send warm vibes your way...

5. thanks

this is a HUGE building, owned by a management company and I KNOW they are working on it.

according to the security guard, the heat is 'coming up'

yes, i *could* go to my writing partner's place but probably will just tough it out.

and don't worry, would NEVER go to bed with the oven on. i was plenty toasty in my bed last night... and I still have 4 more afghans I can add to the pile.

thanks for the warm thoughts.....

(every try to type on a laptop wearing mittens???

8. do you have hot water?
You could run the shower for a few minutes on HOT, and with the drain stopped so the hot water collects in the bathtub for a while.

Light bulbs help keep things warm a bit.

Shut off any rooms you can.

9. Shut off any rooms you can.

pretty tricky in a studio! (HUGE studio but still, one big room)

yeah, hot water is on BUT the bathroom is as far away from the 'living area' as it could be...

thanks. i will cope.

6. I'm without heat as well
Well, techincally it's working, but it's sooo damn cold it can only manage to keep my apartment at around 50 degrees. So I know have plastic covering my two back doors (I feel like Tom Ridge has been to my house) and they brought over some heaters. We'll see if it works.

10. Keep your faucets trickling,
otherwise you run the risk of a pipe breaking - and they tend to break in very inconvenient spots at really bad times.

nastamj i hope ya have hot water bottles and a gas stove...fill them with hot water and place them under the covers with ya...it really helps
it might be wise to invest in an electric blanket for times such as this

BedSty NYC there is a hundred poor families in city projects that haven't had heat or hot water since October....now with these zero temps...i'm sure all the water pipes will freeze and then they will burst and have NO water at all....very sad

13. Sounds like a three girl night
 I've been there, man. Toasty thoughts headed your way. If you have a microwave, nuke a shirt or something - provided it has no metal or plastic parts. A nice hot cotton tee would be heaven, no?

15. Buy a space heater
This happened too us when we had a duplex. We found out that our heater wasn't turning on when fall/winter hit. It went from highs of 60's to highs of 30's in a couple of days. Our landlord was out of town for that week. We took the space heater wherever we went in the house. It raised the temperature fifteen degrees in less than an hour in the living room which was rather big in our former duplex, probably as big or bigger than your studio. You probably shouldn't have it running while you are asleep though. It could be a fire hazard.
I believe that your landlord is in serious violation and is legally required to pay for you to stay in a hotel if heat can not be maintained above 60 degrees.

19. We went without heat for 4 months
Of course we live in Calif.:).. I was too cheap to have someone come out to look at the furnace.:(

It never really gets that cold here, so we just toughed it out :)

When it was time to turn ono the A/C in the spring, I finally did have someone come out and fix the damned thing :)

20. Do you have a microwave?
Make one of those rice thingies to nuke and put it down by your feet at night. Take a tube sock and fill it with rice, tie off the end. Nuke it for about 2-3 minutes. They make great footwarmers! :)
