My husband has to renew his green card

When he got his first one, it was free. The last one was $70. This one is going to cost us $260.

Maybe I wouldn't be so pissed off about it if the government hadn't been pissy about letting him get his passport renewed (he actually had to travel to the consulate...300 miles away...and jump through a lot of other hoops) when his mother was so sick and he wanted to go see her. Although he finally got it, it wasn't until about 3 hours after he got the call that Mama had died. He didn't get to say goodbye and that just makes me livid. Now they want $260 to let him stay in the country where he's been living and paying taxes for 35 years.

Hell, where he's having to pay $3000 THIS year in taxes.

And they both died during this administration and he really doesn't want to any more. It leaves us an escape hatch.

4. Where is he from?

Perhaps he could become a dual national? The US is officially ambivalent about it (meaning that it neither objects nor agrees with dual nationalities). It's up to your husband's country of citizenship to see whether it would be possible for him to retain his citizenship.

My dad is a dual national and so are millions of others. In my career, I have seen people with multiple nationalities. Some examples: UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

My green card does not expire until 2012, so by then the fees will be in the low six figures! :D

5. He's Dutch.

Won't consider duals. We just don't have enough to remove ourselves to his home country. Managed to lose everything but the house and car when he was out of work for 2 years (due to outsourcing). The savings are starting to build up again and we've managed to pay off all the things that got behind in those 2 years. We're no longer having to pinch every penny but there's no way we'll ever be able to replace what was lost...and we'll never be able to retire.
