3. I watched that game.
And Henderson did NOT intentionally slug him. He was going for the ball, and his elbow went wild, hitting the other player in the nose.

It was a lousy call by the refs, and Billy Packer agrees with me. :P

Go, Duke!!

deciding on their call.

5. Again, that's his ELBOW, not a fist.
And if you were refereeing in the Dean Dome, you'd probably make the same call, if for nothing more than self-preservation.

7. So it has to be a fist to be a flagrant foul?
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 11:49 PM by Lex
And the refs called it that way because they were scared?

Hmmm.

I've played enough ball to have never seen anything like that except when a guy wanted to pop another one. That was no accident and Packer immediately jumped on Duke's side and Coack K (see link) is claiming that it was somehow Hanbrough's fault.

That whole program is slime.

6. It was a BS call by the ref.
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 11:36 PM by LostInAnomie
They showed that replay a million times and Henderson was definitely going after the ball. It was bad luck that his elbow hit Hansbrough in the nose.

That ref was intimidated by the crowd into making a shitty call. You can tell he wasn't paying attention to the play because in the ref huddle he kept punching to demonstrate the accident, even though it was an elbow.

8. That pic does not accurately reflect the event...
That picture makes it look like Henderson deliberately hit Hansborogh and that's not at all what happened. The pic doesn't show his hand clearly, either - Henderson's hand was OPEN, and he was in the process of swatting at the ball.

I watched that game. This happened with about 20 seconds left in the game, and it all happened in a split second.

Everyone was going for the rebound, and one of Duke's players (#51, Johnson - who is a walkon player) fouled Hansborogh. The ref whistled the foul. At the same time as Johnson fouled Hansborogh while going for the ball, Henderson (Duke #15) was jumping to also go for the ball AND Hansborogh was jumping for the ball. Henderson was swatting at the ball, and Hansborogh jumped as Henderson swatted - and Henderson's elbow or arm went right into Hansborogh's nose. It was NOT a deliberate foul. Then the refs spent a good 5 minutes looking at the tape to see where they'd call the foul. According to mr liberty, this is against the rules for the officials to decide who to call a foul on by looking at the tape. Anyway, they ejected Henderson, and suspended him for a game. Both of the commentators for the game agreed that Henderson did not deliberately foul Hansborogh, and that the refs made a really bad call. Those commentators are not Duke fans, either, and this incident was replayed at least half a dozen times while the refs talked about it amongst themselves. It's the first time I've agreed with Billy Packer in I don't know how long.

UNC was up by over 10 points, and still had in all their starters, who were playing as if they were down by 2 points - with 20 seconds or less left in the game. They were running fast breaks and padding their stats. Roy Williams wants to let his players pad their stats and run up the score in the last 30 seconds of a game that they're clearly going to win. They've done it in games all year, hell, they've always done it, and it's not really very sportsmanlike of them, but that has nothing to do with this incident except that everyone on the court was still playing hard.

11. Oh, nonsense
Coach K essentially said after the game that Hansborough had it coming cause he was still on the court. Roy Williams pointed out that he very well remember a UNC-Duke game where Duke came back from an 8 point deficit in the last 17 seconds. It wasn't a 30 point lead or something. Henderson didn't extend his arm for a block at all. I'm sure he didn't mean to smack him in the face, but there's little question he was trying to foul him hard.

Your husband is also incorrect. In college basketball, the refs can look at the replay of a foul to determine if it was intentional or not. If they think it was, which they did, there is an automatic suspension.

Williams also did *not* have all the starters in at the end. He had all his seniors in because it was senior day (this included Dewey Burke, who *never* plays.)

12. exactly
it was an intentional foul (by that I don't think he meant to hit him in the face, but he certainly wanted to hit him) the refs made the right call, the problem with hard fouls is that sometimes, as someone said, it turns into assault and battery. And why way Henderson, Duke's leading scorer, in the game if it was all over in the first place?

I think both coaches said it later on, they should have pulled them, and, in fact, there was a sub for Psycho T at the scorer's table, had the free throw gone in, he would have been out of the game.

and coach K learns a valuable lesson in the post-game presser, it is a lot easier to be the epitome of class when you haven't lost 4 out of 5 to Carolina.

18. I didn't say...
mr liberty said the refs couldn't look at a replay to determine if it was an intentional foul or not. What I said was that mr liberty said that they couldn't look at a replay to determine WHO to call the foul on. It was Johnson who fouled Hansborogh first - and that is when the official blew the whistle. Unfortunately, Henderson was in the air swatting at the ball, and Hansborogh was jumping to rebound the ball AS the ref was blowing the whistle for the foul. They turned it into a foul only against Henderson because of the bloody nose.

And it was a 12 point lead, with 14.5 seconds to go. This year's Duke team is NOT the same team as the 2001 team that won the National Championship and came back from a 10 point deficit to win in less than one minute. And Duke had some of their walk on players in - hence Johnson being in.

And "all the seniors were in because it was senior day" still has nothing to do with Hansborogh being in - he's not a senior.

19. Your point is irrelevant
since they were obviously looking at the video to decide whether Henderson's foul was intentional or not. It's not like anyone missed the forearm shiver to the face.

You said all of UNC's starters were in--they weren't, and I pointed that out. Hansborough was in because he was the *free throw shooter* and could not be substituted out. As the above poster astutely pointed out, there was a sub sitting at the scorer's table and if that free throw had gone in, Hansborough was coming out of the game.

The fact that Coach K implied that he had it coming is simply disgraceful. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since he's a bigtime freeper donor.

14. Not on purpose, totally accidental
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 11:18 AM by NYCparalegal
if you review all the camera shots, Gerald was looking the other way from Hansbrough and was swatting (or attempting to swat) at the ball.

Even my DH, a die-hard Carolina fan, admitted as such.

Gerald should have been called for a flagrant foul, maybe, but he should not have been suspended for the next game.

As to Coach K's press conference, I suggest you read all of it. He didn't say that Hansbrough deserved it because the starters were still playing with a few seconds left in the game.
