I'd like to hear happy thoughts only!

On edit: I truly enjoyed looking at all the parent pictures today. Also, I used my new pineapple scented soap for the first time.

33. I went to Borders and forgot to bring the list, so I came home with
a John Coltrane I knew wasn't on it... "My Favorite Things." I like some of it but not the title track. I have the list but come into a bit of money before I can go and make my next investment. Although... I wonder if I can find some of them at the library? I hadn't thought of that.

40. My Favorite Things is one of his best.
Though Blue Train is probably his most accessible. On MFT, he plays soprano sax, while he normally plays tenor sax on the rest of his discography.

The library may have at least a few of them, especially since they're all popular classics. Though if you want the original art and everything and can swing it, Amazon has a lot of them for under $10 each.

But if you want to start out slow, I'd go with Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," John Coltrane's "Blue Train," and Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out."

46. Okay, in that order.
I think you can't grasp how poor I am right now. It won't last forever but it will last until June/July when I hope to be employed.

I'll do the Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" first. I remembered that one on your list had "Blue" in it, but every artist has a "Blue" album and when I got home to check, you had listed two "Blues." I have the memory of a flea; ask anyone.

57. Oh, I can definitely empathize.
;)

Definitely start with "Kind of Blue." It's my favorite album and is considered one of, if not the greatest jazz albums ever. It's also a good indicator of jazz appreciation -- if you don't like it (hard for anyone not to), then you probably wouldn't like jazz in general.

It's worth mentioning this Amazon.com review of it ($8 on Amazon, BTW):

"This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny."

Actually, that's the great thing about Kind of Blue.
It's one of those rare albums that's both simple and complex at the same time.

You can know absolutely nothing about the mechanics of jazz and still be amazed by the sheer accessibility of the album while not realizing how intricate and textured it is.

19. Here's my story of debauchery and rock and roll from last night.
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 10:30 PM by primate1
But it happened after midnight, so it still counts. :P

I went to see a couple bands play last night (http://www.myspace.com/geinusband and http://www.myspace.com/swords666 if anyone is interested). Afterwards it took ages to get a cab home. The wait featured some ridiculously drunk chick flashing every cab that went by in an attempt to get one to stop, and her also ridiculously drunk friend stumbling up to me and slurred, in the saltiest*, drunken Newfoundland English I've ever heard, "You're some hot, because you got a lip ring. I wants one of them, but my work makes me take this (points to her labret stud) and this (points to her eyebrow ring) out. You wanna kiss, and make out?" (Those were more or less her exact words, I shit you not.)

Sketchy? Very. I chuckled nervously and declined her offer.

Meanwhile her friend was still flashing cabs and at one point said "Maybe I needs to show them my pussy," (again, more or less a direct quote) and proceeded to pull down her pants and continue the gratuitous nudity.

I felt like shouting "I need an adult! I need an adult!" haha.

I finally got a cab for myself, and returned home, weirded out yet mildly amused.

(* The adjective salty in this instance refers to the Newfoundland accent being stronger near areas that have salt water.)

Last night I was weirded out. Now it's just hilarious, haha.

Full of fun and mischief and curiosity. :-) I ask about the jokes because years ago on a trip through Nova Scotia we ended up at a comedy club. The comedian was from Newfoundland and the jokes had us on the floor. It was the end of a rather rough week on the road and we were at each other's throats (4 of us) After that night, everything was OK. Someday I hope to travel to Newfoundland and meet youse guys on your own turf.

94. Well, a stranger walks into a Nova Scotia bar and says to the bartender:
"Hey, you wanna hear a great Newfie joke?"

The bartender snarls, stands up straight exposing his arms he uses for bouncing obstreperous customers and says, "Wait a minute. I'm a Newfie."

"And see that fellow over there by the jukebox with the chains? He works down at the ways and drags the boats up by hand. He's a Newfie."

"And that guy in the leather jacket with him, he repairs boat engines and he's a Newfie too. Now, do you still want to tell a Newfie joke?"

The visitor looks around at the other men and shakes his head, "Naw, I don't want to have to explain it three times."

32. Pretty non-descript day for me
The 76ers won again. I don't buy that "keep losing stuff," because draft picks aren't certain to be great anyway. The attitude you establish is important.

I also used my new LightScribe technology CD labeler. It's easier, but there are also not as many options. It takes longer than I thought, too. Still, you don't have to keep using paper and pressing on the thing to get a label.

my crotch is sore, my leg muscles are shot, it hurts to walk and I'm totally tired. Plus I feel like I need to drop about 10-15 lbs of the winter blub. I felt every bit of it climbing up those damn hills, lemme tell ya. :eyes: Oh well, all in good time...

It was my first serious ride of the season and it was a LOT to bite off....maybe too much.

I think I need some Advil and an early bedtime. The hot tub earlier helped, though. :D

72. Hey I saw my brother today
My earliest memory of him, he had a long stringy metal ponytail and he'd just signed me up for the kiss army. He was getting me on the phone with him friends to yell out "Phil ***** is KING! METAL RULES!" while he scared me with a light up skull with flashing eyes.
Ahhh my brother.

So apropos of nothing, I saw my brother, ergo there was metal, ergo being absorbent as well as awesome I sopped.

67. Yesterday, but it still counts
Had $32 left in our checking account with zero food in the pantry, when outta nowhere our income tax refund for 2004 shows up - I was dead sure I was going to get audited since it took me so long to file (the first of this year). On top of that, they withheld back taxes I owed from 2003 because of an assholic ex-employer, and *that* made the check small enough to cash at the grocery store, instead of having to wait til the bank opened on Monday. Still over a grand, though. And I don't owe any back taxes.

Needless to say, we had a much nicer weekend than we thought we would. :bounce:

My life is, apparently, falling apart before me. I can't even complain because I wouldn't know where to start. Simply imagine a pretty china cabinet full of beautiful things and then imagine it being tipped over neatly, in one movement.

And there you have it, in a nutshell.

Thanks for asking, though. Go snuggle. It's infinitely more rewarding.

117. I decided to listen to some music and found this song
by OTEP called Blood Pigs. It's a great hardcore song. I went through a period of time of mourning after Metallica softened up until I discovered many many underground hardcore punk bands in upstate New York to listen to back in the late 80's/early 90's. They are a great group of people up there near Syracuse and I desperately needed something new and good to listen to. About a year ago, I found this video free on OTEP's web site and downloaded it. I'm on dialup and it took all night to download it, but I really wanted to hear them after a friend told me about how good and hard their music was. Finding this song on my hard drive after being too busy for the past year to stop and enjoy the things I really enjoy in life really felt great. OTEP is one great lyricist and one great poet. I really like her. It refreshed me and reminded me of how great women are to find this song and listen to it again. It proves women can be powerful and say what we have to say.

I realize this may be a bit different than what you may expect as a good thing happening to a person, but it's good for me in my little corner of the world. I just really like hardcore music and miss getting to play in my little punk rock bands more than anyone knows.

Here are the lyrics to the song I was talking about.

OTEP
Blood Pigs
Lyrics

eye'm sorry, eye'm ugly, all that i am, and i can never live up, eye'm failing, eye'm angry, afraid of the ways, they pretend to be us. its fuct up, eye'm different, wurdz remain, my only escape. art saves, all of me, evolving, and now you're walking away!!! eye'm so afraid! and now your walking away!. eye'm so ashamed! and now your walking away!!!

my mistake, was trusting you, blood pigs, with creating my fate. with poetry and suffering. i cannibalized, every ounce of my pain. eye'm still afraid, everyday. these greedy worms, - they devour my plagues, eye'm not your slave, eye'm conquering. you see me rise, & now you're walking away!!! eye'm not ashamed! and now your walking away! eye'm not afraid! and now your walking away!!!

you can't hurt me anymore, you can't hurt me anymore. fed from the womb from which we were bled, vomiting filth in our soft cave heads, chewing on tissue, tendon and fat, destroying the things they do not understand!

tyrant. betrayer. parasite. traitor!!... and still u feed them... and still you need them, eye'm sorry, eye'm ugly, dangerous, can't describe it enough, eye'm failing, eye'm angry. i use my fear to empower my hate, eye'm fuct up, eye'm different. wurdz remain my only escape, art saves, all of me, evolving, and now your walking away!!! eye'm not ashamed! and now your walking away! eye'm not afraid! and now your walking away! and now your walking away! and now your walking away! and now your walking away

138. Totally serious.
He just put something in my hand. I never look immediately (bad form, ya know), so later, when I took it out, I expected something like $20.

And the treasurer is the one who told me about the $5,000 check. In fact, that's when I pulled out the money to look at it.... then nearly fell over. :)

148. Made about a 240-mile round trip today
from Dayton to Fostoria with three of my four kids (my 6, 7-1/2, and 16-year old) to see my great aunt who turned 99 on Sunday. We also stopped in and saw my great uncle (my great aunt's brother) and his wife. Nobody was expecting us, so our visits were surprises -- happily, they were welcome surprises. It was great to make their days, and in turn, they made ours. It was a great day for a drive, even though it was cold it was sunny. The kids were great, and was able to get some nice pictures of them with their great-great relatives.

All in all, not a bad day.

:-)

151. I made a delicious, low-cal/high-nutrition dinner *with* a kick-ass dessert tonight.
My husband is diabetic and I'm just trying to be healthy and fit, so we spend a lot of time perusing cook books and experimenting with recipes to give each dish a big nutritional bang for the buck, plus tons of flavor and satisfaction, plus make it good for his blood sugar. For dinner we had homemade soup (turkey meatballs, kale, carrots, collard greens, black beans, onions and broth), mesclun salad, whole sweet potatoes roasted with onion slices, and lamb chops (very small servings, big flavor).

The crowning glory was the apple crisp I made. It was apple slices tossed with lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon (good for diabetics), soy flour to thicken (low carb, high protein), and brown rice syrup to sweeten (doesn't spike blood sugar). The topping was made with whole oats, brown rice syrup, chopped walnuts, flax seed meal instead of butter, cinnamon and a pinch of salt. It was fantastic and full of nutrition. One serving was only 189 calories and 33 carbs, with most of the carbs being complex. What little fat is in it comes from the walnuts and the flax seed, which are both excellent sources of cholesterol-lowering omega-3 fatty acids (good fat). If anyone is interested in the exact recipe I can post it.

And called her last night in Indiana. She filled me in on much of her branch. And she thinks she has some pictures of her grandfather, the WWI vet and medal winner, which I have been salivating trying to find.

For anyone who doesn't know, I'm writing a family history from my GGG grandparents forward on my Smith side. I have about 700 pages so far. Every cousin I find who can help me add more data is another feather in the cap, and another few pages to the book.
