Poll question: I have 'til 3/31 to upgrade from Win XP to Vista for free...is it worth it?
I got a new laptop (Vista compatible) last November and part of the purchase was a free upgrade to Vista upon its release. I've heard it's buggy, but that's just anecdotal evidence.

I search of MORE anecdotal evidence, who has taken the plunge with Vista and what's your experience been?

1. Get the DVD; don't install it until long after Vista SP1 comes out.
If you do decide to upgrade when hearing from others SP1 does some good in terms of performance and system requirements, you can still upgrade for free.

If SP1 turns out to do nothing, oh well.

2. good advice
they do just send the CD instead of a direct download.

Thanks.

6. I think this is an excellent idea
Vista should be fine once driver support matures some more

15. Depends on what kind of user you are
some people like to be on the bleeding edge of technology. Some people like their stuff to work better. Different people, different strokes, I guess.

17. Of course
which is why I agreed that it was a good idea to wait until drivers are more mature.

What's the problem here?

4. If it works now
I'd be inclined not to fuck with it. Been hearin' wind of some driver issues & whatnot.
Software and hardware both, I recommend leaving it for a good long time before switching.
But, that isn't even my personal experience with Vista. Just my what my personal experience has taught me in general.

5. Take your new laptop back and buy a Mac, dammit!
You just KNEW that was coming, didn't you?

I have nothing for you but that. I've seen Vista in the stores and it LOOKS pretty.

7. I posted a thread two weeks ago mentioning the problems I
had with vista and my thoughts about Bill Gates..and got some minor flaming from some narrow minded DU'rs abou reading the manual and blaming the wrong party...oh well....BUT if you have old equipment (five years or more) printers, pda's etc don't upgrade until you know if the drivers have been updated by the manufacturer for use with vista...I have an expensive dead printer now and I can't stream AAR due to some plugin glitch...moving back to XP today

10. I bought a copy of Vista ultimate for 191.00
I like it. It upgraded easily although I still need to wait until Nvidia comes out for a driver to support the SLI video card configuration I have. They promise an update by the end of the month.

11. Well, I'm about to upgrade, but only...
...to try out 64-bit computing. I don't think Vista is going to do much for me beyond that. My wife will get to exercise her OS-installing muscles, and I'll finally be able to play Neverwinter Nights 2.

I'm not doing it. I also have until 3/31 but decided a while back to hold off.

14. I'm still heavily debating whether or not to get Vista with my new PC
I have an XP license (and I'm building my system around a Core 2 Duo, so I don't need a 64-bit OS) so there may not be a need for it yet, at least until SP1 comes out.
