Before my SO left for North Dakota yesterday, she, in her infinite wisdom decided to feed our large collie/german shep mix a can of Alpo. He's usually on a strict diet of Pedigree dry.

I've spent the morning cleaning up runny dog shit off of our sun porch.

THAT'S IT. If she feeds him another can, I'm leaving.

5. did she make it there ok?
My parents live there and they had a big blizzard yesterday. If she was driving, then I guess she wouldn't be there yet but I hear the roads are really icy. Be careful.

6. She flew. Called me from Minneapolis last night
Haven't heard from her today. She would have called if she got delayed.

7. I just went through big dog with runny doopy syndrome a few days ago
http://www.ardmoreah.com/showpracfaq.cfm?FAQID=3053&Private=1

Diarrhea Protocol for Dogs--

PLEASE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH OUR DOCTORS IF YOUR DOG IS SHOWING ANY SIGNS OF LETHARGY/IS VOMITING ALONG WITH THE DIARRHEA OR IF DIARRHEA HAS LASTED MORE THAN 24 HOURS.

1. Fast your dog for 24 hours. Only water is permitted.

2. Bring stool sample to office to check for intestinal parasites.

3. Start giving:

Pepto Bismol (generic brand is fine) caplets (not the chewable) or liquid.

Caplets: Give 1 caplet per 60 pounds of body weight. For example, if your dog weighs 90 pounds you will give 1 1/2 caplets.

Liquid: Give 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of body weight.

Each can be given every 4 to 6 hours for up to 2 days.

or

Imodium (generic brand is fine) tablets or liquid

Tablets: Give 1 tablet (2 mg) per 40 pounds of body weight

Liquid: Give 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight

Each can be given 2-3 times per day for up to 2 days.

4. After the 24 hour fast begin feeding a combination of boiled white meat chicken (with all the skin and fat removed and the water poured off) and boiled long grain white rice. The combination of rice to chicken will be 2 to 1. In other words, if you want to give your dog a total of one cup of food he/she will receive 1/3 cup chicken mixed with 2/3 cup of rice. Feed several small meals per day rather than one or two large meals. You may also come into the office to pick up a prescription food called I/D which is a canned version of the rice and chicken mixture. You will give either bland diet until you start to see a normal bowel movement, or until you haven't seen a bowel movement for a day.

5. After seeing normal bowel movements for a day or two, gradually start adding your dog's regular food into the bland food mixture. Each day, (as long as the movements are normal) increase the amount of dog food and decrease the amount of bland food until you have reached the point where your dog is on 100% dog food. This is not the time to change your dog's diet. You must allow his intestinal tract to become normal again.

<Snip>

Please remember that if the diarrhea does not subside in a day or two, or if your dog is lethargic call your veterinarian!! Dog's can become dehydrated very quickly if diarrhea is allowed to continue unchecked. This is a significant medical problem, and can be life threatening.

8. thanks for that
He's fine now. It's that damned canned food that's too rich for him. He's only used to eating dry.

No. More. Alpo.

10. Yeah that quick food switch is never a good thing
Imodium helps a lot though. Makes doggie feel better and you won't have to keep cleaning up all that icky runny doopy! YUCK!

Hope both you and doggie feel better soon!
