55. sorry... gotta go with the expert on this
Lennon was asked in an interview: "Do you think Ringo is the best rock drummer in the world?" Lennon replied: "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

68. He was joking about that.
Just saw him on PBS on the Stones Rock and Roll Circus singing Yer Blues with Clapton and Keith Richards; a kick-ass track, then Yoko came on wailing for 5 minutes and ruined it all.

would have been commenting about Paul's extracurricular re-doing
of Ringo's drum track.

I was going to say Stewart Copeland (seriously) in the other thread, and didn't bother to even respond.

There are a ton of drummers I like though. Copeland is freaking awesome - have you heard Klark Kent (his solo project that more or less makes fun of Sting)?

Though I knew about them. I thought that was before the Police.

I got to see Oysterhead play last summer. They were very, very, very good, but I was disappointed that there was so much jammy Trey influence and not enough of Claypool and Copeland funking it.

54. Passion and exuberance!
God how I love Kieth Moon! I don't care that much for "technical excellence" at the cost of passion. Fred MacDowell Vs. Robert Cray? Bye, Bob. Same with drummers.

Y'ever see that black & white footage of the early Who playing at some daytime gig? Kind of a shallow, wide stage? God, that was the shit.

I also dig D.J. Bonebrake, if precision is a must.

The only drummer I really resent is the drummer for Soundgarden, whoever that was.

22. No such thing.
If you're a jazz guy, you're looking at Elvin Jones. Period. End of story. Elvin swung triplets, when everyone else was swinging eighths.

Big band? I'm going with Louie Bellson over Buddy Rich for one reason--Louie Bellson invented double bass. He was the first player in any genre to use two bass drums.

Rock? Definitely Peart.

36. A quote from Buddy Rich
Buddy Rich once said that Gene Krupa was the "beginning and the end of all jazz drummers." Louie Bellson said of Gene, "He was a wonderful, kind man and a great player. He brought drums to the foreground. He is still a household name."

100 Best drummers based on skills: The top three: Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd

Here’s the complete list:

70. Kind of a strange list
Most people would put Phil Collins, who is at least decent, on a list like this.

I'm a bit surprised that neither Chris Adler (Lamb of God) nor Johnny Rabb (Bio Diesel--yes, that's a real band) are on here. Then again, this is a "most versatile drummers" list; Adler is a heavy metal drummer and Rabb is a rock drummer who makes most of his coin giving clinics.

72. I agree Phil Collins should have been on this list and he should have been higher on the list of
"rock drummers". I have a problem with the words "best" and "greatest" when it comes to judging art so I don't put too much stock in these types of lists. I prefer to consider "favorites" and, for me, that list would include Neil Peart at the top, Mitch Mitchell from Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham, Ian Paice from Deep Purple and Cozy Powell of Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Here he is in a clip from his Rainbow days:

He is certainly very talented and has proved to be an excellent composer as well, but best ever? He's not even the best of the 80's.:eyes:

Buddy Rich
Ginger Baker
Bun E. Carlos
Neal Pert

any of these names ringing any bells?

Keith Moon
Gene Krupa

ANY of these guys could give lessons to Copeland, and he'd gladly pay for them, too.
