2. You might considering rewording the question.
"Name a band in which the primary vocalist CAN sing." That goes for "pop divas" as well.

I just found out about something call "Autotune" -- some device that electronically makes sure the vocalist track is in tune. AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

44. Been around for quite a few years now
The Autotune system from Antares is the most prevalent/popular, available as a hardware device or as a software plug-in for digital recording pacakges like Pro Tools, Sonar, Cubase, Logic, etc. It's sometimes nice to be able to correct a clinker in an otherwise good performance by a good singer, but it too often is used to correct for lack of pitch control. I was listening to a Nelson Riddle track from the 60's this morning (Theme from Route 66, off Ultra-Lounge Bachelor Pad Royale)...the sound quality and performance far surpassed most of today's recordings. There's no substitute for good musicians, a good room, a good engineer, vacuum tubes, and analog tape. Delicious.

She was and still is the one and only true diva with talent in my opinion. Twenty years from now people will still know who Cher was.

Britney who? You mean the girl in all those down-loadable porn movies used to sing?

Just a hunch....Nobody will give a shit about Britney or her music in a few more years so she'll probably start doing a bunch of little 5 min. porn downloads that you can put on your ipod for $0.99 apiece. Or she'll be dead or in prison. I just hope she gets her tubes tied sometime in the not so distant future.

107. His Limitations Were Worked Around
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 08:04 PM by Crisco
He never did have the greatest range, but their earlier stuff didn't ask very much of him.

It's when he has to start belting he runs into trouble, and belting is pretty much all he's done since 1975 or so.

I got to see the Who in the very late 1980s and he couldn't hit the high notes at all, but it was a great show in spite of that, and his presence & charisma more than make up for what's lacking technically.

6. The Rolling Stones. And Bruce Springsteen.
 What can I say? Mick's a great showman, and at least he can carry a tune, but god damn, the man can't sing.

As for Bruce Springsteen: I have never, will never, understand the appeal. The only song of his I've ever liked is "Philadelphia" and that's because it was an awesome movie and the song fit perfectly.

52. My dear Bertha
You have clearly never been to see The Boss in person. I have converted more "never got the appeal" people to true fans by taking them to see him live. The man radiates both joy and energy (okay, maybe not when he's doing his "Nebraska" stuff, but still). To see him rip into Rosalita, Born to Run, Badlands or any of his other anthems live is not to be believed.

Listening to that voice sing "Thunder Road", whether live or recorded, gives me chills every time.

It may help to be a Philly or Jersey girl, but anyone who isn't a Californian can normally be converted.

Hope all the kittys are well...:hi:

Growing up my sister loved Bruce Springsteen. She had the born in the USA poster (of his ass) on the ceiling over her bed. It was Bruce this and Bruce that. I HATED HIM.

Went an saw a show @ Vets Stadium and guess who was converted?

Born to Run gets me EVERY time. Atlantic City, Badlands, Rosalita.. I cry every time I hear The Rising.

I'm a fan. Converted, but a fan.

26. You said it. Almost every "popular" act today can't carry a tune
with a front-end loader. And they can't play instruments, either. How sad is that?

Sure, there are rare exceptions (and I'm sure people some will point them out here), but for the most part, it's pretty much a vast wasteland out there.

I'm convinced that this is by design. I think that the powers-that-be that sell us all our music WANT the idiotic kids out there who have no talent whatsoever to THINK that they can be the next big thing. Every kid now wants to be the next P Diddy or American Idol (and they probably can be), and so they're even more inclined to buy all the records of their dubious "musical" heroes who have about as much talent as they do.

The other day I heard that there have been some American Idol finalists who actually COULD play an instrument, and even quite well. Yet they are not asked to do this. I wonder why?

34. Sad, isn't it? Half the groups out there who call themselves "bands"
couldn't instrumentalize/vocalize their way outta wet paper bags.

My favorite exception, from the current lot: Chris Cornell from Audioslave. Now THERE is a voice, holy shit...one of the best sets of pipes in R 'n' R today, and the band can fuckin' PLAY...
They rock.

105. Agreed - Plant's voice crapped out years ago.
But then, when you are chain-smoking, drinking like a fish and generally abusing your body, ingesting tons of drugs and hitting notes high enough to peel paint every night, what do you expect?

Plant was the weakest link in that band. They could never replace Bonzo but if Plant had keeled over instead, I'm sure they would've found somebody else to sing.

All of Deep Purple's singers were WAY better than "Robert Planet", as Frank Zappa called him.

41. The Flaming Lips
Now, don't everybody throw rocks at me at once. Wayne Coyne's crackling, almost-hits-the-high-note voice is one of the reasons I love that band. Mind you, he never nails a note dead-on, but has that ever stopped him from trying his Okie heart out? There's something very beautiful to be appreciated in that style that no TV karaoke contestant could ever understand.

115. Flame away - it's Tom Waits
Yeah I know he is popular, very much so in my town. And I know people who pretend to like him because he is trendy.

But to me he sounds like he has had his throat cut and is gurgling through the blood. I just spent two hours at my local pub, and the bartender is a Tom Waits fanatic. Most customers were ignoring it, but myself and a female table server were in pain. To our protestations, he just turned the volume up.

Finally one of my friends went to to his car and brought in a Ween CD, which the bartender played. Ahhh.... :)

I forget. I never liked the mid-90's alterno-rock.

Edit-
Oh, yes. I should add every Death Metal band to the list.
Here is a Merduk video. It parodies every death-grind metal band in existence.
