Do you ever lie in your internet interactions with others?

I'm not speaking specifically of what you do on DU (though I'm not excluding it, either). I'm talking about blogs, internet forums, groups, email, dating sites, I think you get the gist. Basically, all the places online you can express yourself. I'm not talking specifically about trolling, after all, we know that no DUers would ever do that, right?

Have you ever lied online and if so how/why? Do you regret it?

Bonus question: Would you have the nerve to talk to people face to face the same way you talk to them online?

I don't do shit like, "I have a million dollars, wanna fuck? I will give you half after I'm done." My Modus operandi for fibs is usually based on my lame attempts at making a joke or snarking at someone.

5. I Can't Recall Doing So ... Really!

I post here and on a couple usenet groups, and I don't post a lot anywhere. I'm pretty sure I haven't posted anything untrue about me because I try to keep details to a minimum (other than the endless bitching about my kidneys) and I'm pro-choice, so when I post a stat, I can back it up. I've been online for 15 years, though, and my memory isn't that good anymore.

9. i told the truth about something and totally regret it. i should have lied like everybody did.

it was on the cheating thread. i then got a flood of pm's from du'ers who claimed they have never cheated or were silent on that thread, stating they wouldnt have the balls to admit to it but ofcourse they did cheat.

yes i would, i am actually much more assertive in real life. the only difference is in real life i sometimes try to educate people on issues (esp related to feminism and glbt rights) whereas online sometimes i can just dismiss someone as a troll/phobe/sexist etc.

23. I tone myself down online

but don't lie (why waste the effort). I have a much more caustic and sarcastic sense of humor IRL, but, in the out-of-context world of the interweb, a lot gets lost and most people just get offended. And I swear a lot less here in the ether (why yes, my mother was a fishmonger and my dad DID hold a job for a while teaching sailors to swear :sarcasm: ). I've been online for about 15 years, and have learned my humor rarely translates well to the written word.

so if that is considered lying, then yes. I just don't think it's safe when you are dealing with unknown entities to use your legal name. Other than that, no. There is nothing that happens on a website on the internet that is worth a shred of my integrity, because I don't think there are different rules for this media than for the rest of life.
