My botany professor had us try durian in lab today

:puke:

I swear, the smell is still clinging to my clothes.

2. If you can get past the smell...
...durian is pretty tasty. It needs to be fresh, though.

7. Oh, yeah. Kinda like a banana custard with vanilla in it, is the way I remember it.

10. That's a very good description.
The stuff that's processed and packaged in plastic pouches as a snackfood is unspeakable, though. They sell it throughout Southeast Asia and I defy anyone not raised on the stuff from childhood to keep it down.

11. Holy shit, I've never seen that, but I believe it must be vile. I was in SE Asia in 1972, so
I guess my time there predated the packaged stuff.

Durian is remarkably like pawpaw; not only in taste but also in the fact that it processes and ships VERY poorly. If you want to eat pawpaw, you HAVE to go down South when it's in season.

28. The classic description is ...
... "eating peaches and cream with cinnamon while standing in an open sewer."

I have bought durian here in Sydney and not found the smell all that dreadful. Perhaps the variety we grow (in north Queensland) has been bred for less smell? I confess to thinking the flavour over-rated; I'd rather have an Alphonso mango any day.

5. Oh the rest of the lab was great
Two rooms filled with fruits, veggies and other crop plants from around the world. Lots of things to touch, poke, smell and taste. I love that kind of learning.

I just could have done without the durian...

8. I have never gotten past the smell
Ah, I still remember the smell of the durian I once tossed into a dumpster on a 90 degree day. The smell permeated the neighborhood and was reminiscent of the smell of a thousand soiled diapers. It was not pleasant.

9. Tasty! But yes, very very smelly.
I remember reading in the paper a year or so ago about some airlines in the south pacific area making a "no durian" rule on flights.

and let that durian sit by the heat vent...

Hmmm... no fine listed for durians... maybe just a good old-fashioned caning??

20. Try it at a Vietnamese or Thai restaurant
After the Seven courses of Beef or the Beef Jerky Salad with Papaya.

The smell is gone and all that remains is this really amazing taste.

24. I've had chemistry or chem lab every weekday since late August
(except for breaks, naturally). We're doing different kinds of equilibrium equations now, but it just seems like the same thing over and over.

29. I've never eaten it but have smelled it
keep in mind that I am an "adventurous eater" (my wife describes it as "garbage disposal"... lol), but I can't get past what I thought smelled like a foot up someone's ass for a week.

30. That's abuse!
I'd report him....

OMG that is the NASTIEST STUFF ON THE PLANET! (Worse than sauerkraut or rutabagas!)

My 13 yo son gave my 8 yo son a piece in the car a few weeks ago. Why he ever put it in his mouth after smelling it, I'll never know. He promptly spit it out and we had to roll down the windows (and it was snowing!) He said he'd rather suck on dirty socks than ever eat that stuff again.
