So I got another dog...
Not *my* dog - but a dog standing in the middle of the street in heavy traffic. I couldn't just leave her there, so I picked her up. She was soaking wet and stunk to high heaven. I called the number on her tag - it was the number of a family on the other side of the state that said they gave her away a year ago... They don't remember the name or number of the woman they gave her to, but she is a friend of their neighbor's, who happens to be away on vacation so I still have no idea who she belongs to.

I brought her in and gave her a bath, and she slept contentedly on the floor all night, while my dog slept in bed with me. She's a black lab, very sweet, and thankfully quite well behaved.

Here's hoping for a happy reunion between her and her owner sometime today!

1. That was very kind of you.
Too many people just keep on driving.

4. I often keep driving...
Unfortunately I live in a small town where too many people think it's proper to let their dogs roam the streets all the time. :eyes: This was different as it wasn't in a neighborhood and the dog was IN TRAFFIC, in the middle of the road. She needed to be picked up. I couldn't just leave her there.

2. Was she happy to come along with you or was she afraid?
(Just trying to guage how long she might have been out on the street.)

5. VERY happy.
She jumped right into the car when I was trying to call the number on her tags - from OUTSIDE the car. She stunk soooooo bad and was so filthy... ah well. Looks like I need some car detailing now as well. ;)

3. I certainly hope that you can find the dog's 'people'.
And, I hope they are loving folks who are very concerned about their pooch having gotten away!

You did a very good thing in saving that dog.

8. This story is sad and sweet at the same time.
Sad because he was standing alone in the middle of traffic and you can't keep him, sweet because you bothered to get out of your car and help the poor pup. Thanks you for helping him.

10. aww..
I hope she finds her family, but if not, congrats on your new dog!

I did the same thing a few years ago - was driving home and saw a dog in the middle of a busy street. I pulled over, went and got her and brought her home. She was a sweetie.

I cooked her a hamburger. She ate it, and crawled up on my couch to sleep. I called the number on the tag and left a message.

3 hours later, they called back - turns out she was 16 years old and had never escaped before. They were frantic.

What struck me was how easily she decided that she'd just live with me. She wasn't stressed at all. I would hope my dog would at least feel bad if he lost me.

12. Don't think of it that way.
See it as the dog has known nothing but good stuff from people all her life so she had no reason to mistrust you and she knew she'd be going back home soon.

I'll bet if she had stayed a day or 2 you'd have seen a different side.
