1. Depends...
Nektar, Triumvirat, Lucifer's Friend, Jane, and Kraftwerk all had their moments - but I detest the Scorpions. Depends on what counts as Krautrock...

4. Scorpions aren't Krautrock...
Scorpions are idiotic hard rock BOFS. They are even friends of Schröder-idiot! They're disgusting. They're embarassing. They're stupid enough to be successfull in the USA.
Wait till you start an american music thread: my reply will be:
Depends: John Coltrane and Marvin Gaye all had their moments - but I detest Britney Spears....
Dirk

6. Okay, yeah,
so I wasn't quite sure what was included in the definition. But I'm glad to hear it doesn't include the Scorps :)

13. wow
While I don't like the Scorpions, I still wonder: what is your problem with Schröder- your anti-Schröder (even pro-conservative) pseuso philosophy is starting to tick me off.

2. Hallo!
I'm into Krautrock, too. I'm german. Our musicians seem to be the worst, when they try to groove or to copy others, but best, when they emphazise those things, that might be not to admirable at first view.
I will never forget the story behind Kraftwerk's "Autobahn".
They were big Beach Boy's fans, esp. fans of Brian Wilson. And they just had "Fun, Fun, Fun" in mind with the ameican stereotype of Beaches in California, the t-bird etc. And they just translated it into their german context. Fun fun fun became Fahren, fahren, fahren (drivin', drivin', drivin'). It sounds very much like "fun"-> "fahn". And the "Autobahn" (highway). And they emphazised somehow the mechanical aspect of their music - although many people still state, that they invented the break-beat, and esp. afro-american musicians in the USA were into their "groove". The model from Kraftwerk is one of my all time favourites, the video and the song. On the other hand I loved british bands, who were influenced by Kraftwerk like Joy Division and New Order.
I never was a huge fan of Can, although I like some of their work, esp. with that mind-blowing singer.
I last heard "neu" in a discotheque in germany, when I was 11 in 1975!
I promise,I listen to them again. I really liked their music and asked the dj, what record he was playing, but I couldn't find it in any of our local music shops and forgot about them.
There was some incredible good music in germany between 1979 and 1982, too. What later became the Neue Deutsche Welle in it's commercial form.
Hello from Germany,
Dirk

12. Mmmm... kraut.
Come on, SLB, you know full well I love Krautrock. Especially the first two Faust albums, the first two Neu! albums, everything Kraftwerk did in the '70s, and all Can with Malcolm or Damo.

How come nobody's mentioned Tangerine Dream?

Off topic, SLB: I get the "Lord Byron" part. Is the "Screaming" bit in reference to the great Screaming Lord Sutch? I really dig his records with "His Heavy Friends" (best thing Jimmy Page ever did).

14. Yeah, Screaming Lord Sutch, but I can't take credit for the name
I stole it from David Bowie. Scraming Lord Sutch used to head up the Monster Raving Loony Party in the UK.
I don't know too much Tangerine Dream, what can you recommend?

16. Vote for Screaming Lord Sutch!
I really don't know too much Tangerine Dream either -- odd, I've got so many Krautrock records, but none of theirs.

So sorry, no reccomendations... though I suppose I'd start with the earlier stuff.
