Bands you hated at first, but then became fantic fans of later?
For me it was almost all of the groups I listen to till this day:

Talking Heads
Pixies
Nirvana
Marilyn Manson
Devo

When I first heard the early songs by these groups, I just couldn't stand them. I would tear out my already balding hair if I was forced into listening to them.

But then something happened. The music "clicked" and I understood what everyone else had been saying about their talents.

1. Heads and especially Elvis Costello
My friends kept up the peer pressure and in less than a year I was trading away all my vinyl of the Eagles and Boston at the record store to buy Gary Numan and Clash albums. I taped over Journey and Heart and recorded borrowed Blondie and Graham Parker albums.

2. good thread...
in my other thread, I used Springsteen as such an example.

I'd also agree with Marilyn Manson.

Red Hot Chili Peppers grew on me a lot over time. Never liked 'em early on.

Grateful Dead is another. Wasn't a fan going into college, BIG fan coming out.

I was never much of a Madonna fan until a friend took me to see her in concert about 12 years ago. Now I'm a hard-core fan - she works her ass off in concert, and I always admire that.

5. I had the same happen to me with the Peppers
But I've also since fallen out-of-love with them.

7. A friend left his copy of Manson's first CD's at my house
He asked me to listen to it. At first, I hesitated, because I had seen MM with NIN and it had been a putrid show. The fact my seat was behind a pillar might have affected my judgment though. ;-)

So, one day, I put it into the stereo and started riding my stationary bike...and then the music just "clicked"...and then once the music 'clicked" the lyrics "clicked".

(there's more, but it's too fannish ;-) )

8. k.d. lang
Marshall Crenshaw
Graham Parker & The Rumour
Joan Armatrading

Pretty rare for me. Most bands and artists that I like, I pretty much knew I liked them from the outset.

10. Good thread, I am now suspicious of bands I love on first listen
I've come to know that I will tire of them quickly. The bands that challenge me first have been the ones that hold my attention longer and are still in my collection today. Galaxie 500, Minutemen, Feelies, Talking Heads, Zappa...

11. That first TMBG video on MTV's 120 minutes looked stooopid!
"Put your hand in the puppet head" was not approachable. Then one day, I picked up "Lincoln" at the library on a lark and they earned my favor. Those guys are brilliant composers.

(TMBG = They Might Be Giants)

13. Alice in Chains
I really hated them when the band became popular in 1992. About 5 years later, I really listened to "Dirt" and I appreciated the lyrics and the power of Layne Staley's voice. I hate that he shat his life away for heroin.

15. Rush
I was 12 when Presto came out. In my preteen ignorance, I thought Geddy Lee looked well, "affected," to say the least, and that his voice was annoying as hell. Then a few years later one of my girlfriends gave me her copy of Chronicles and I was hooked. I still think Presto is by far their worst record, but I've become a diehard Rush fan. IMO they're one of the most insightful, dynamic, and technically brilliant bands in all of rock.

Neil Young - despised him until I saw him play live at a festival last year.
The Stones
Bowie

Basically, I hated everything that wasn't heavy metal until my college buddies introduced me to a world of great music.

On the other side of the coin, I grew up a fanatic Metallica fan but I won't give them a penny now. Held out even through Load while all my friends were heaping abuse on me about "Selloutica." The Napster lawsuit finally broke me. Thanks alot Lars. :grr:

you hated MM?!?! :wow: :wow: :wow:

It was Soundgarden and other grunge for me. My LA roommate played it LOUD over and over (Soundgarden, Mudhoney,Mother Love Bone, Tad, etc) but eventually I learned to like it.

17. 70s bands that sound better today
Uriah Heep, Bloodrock, and Leslie West/Mountain.

Three bands that sound a lot better the more they age. Back in the 70s I thought they were awful. Today I think they have aged a lot better than some of the other stuff from the same period (e.g. Zeppelin, Kiss, and the Eagles) and sound slightly ahead of their time, the true progenitors of grunge.

18. I hated Springsteen when I first heard him.
Then I heard one or two songs I liked, but still didn't know what the big deal was. Everyone said you really had to see him in person to understand. So I went to see him, and I was totally blown away. He's absolutely the best performer I've ever seen--and I've seen a lot of good ones.

19. thats interesting.
Because I could, to this day, take or leave Springsteen( I have never seen him live though) BUT I have had the experience where I was indifferent to a band and then saw them live and was blown away. Frank Zappa and Tool comes to mind. I saw Zappa in the late 70's when I was probably too young to be going to concerts. Amazing.

Eric Alterman, one of my favorite commentators is a huge fan of Springsteen and always writes about him.

But now they're one of my favorite bands. I also hated my now all-time favorite band, Rage Against The Machine. Same with Alice in Chains and Nine Inch Nails
