16. Do we really need any?

Most of those in current use among speakers of English go back centuries, and in some cases nearly a millenium. The only real innovation over the past few hundred years in words of vituperation, abuse and insult has been due to corrupted forms of existing words (cf. "ho" for "whore", "ass" for "arse") older words acquiring new meanings (see "fuck" and "shit", which have use in current speech far beyond their literal definitions) and the creation of neologistic compounds (cf. "motherfucker", "bitchass", etc).
