I have a confession to make....
I LOVE polyester. I was cleaning out my closet yesterday and noticed I had several blouses and pull overs that were 100% polyester or cotton polyester blend. And they looked as good as the day I bought them several years ago. They wash like a dream and never wrinkle. Yet, in some movies and TV shows I hear characters mocking polyester like it is a self insult to wear anything made of it. I don't get it.

1. It's just cool to make fun of polyester...
Just like it's "cool" to make fun of finger quotes. I use them sometimes, and I also use polyester sometimes.

2. I'm with you, caty. Polyester never did anything to me!
I think that the Cotton Cartel is behind the propaganda! :D

3. Polyester has a bad wrap...
Edited on Sat Feb-24-07 11:24 AM by Prag
(Ha! a pun!)

Anyway, it achieved it's bad reputation during the late '60s and '70s when the technology
to make fine strands of polyester and good cotton/poly blends hadn't been developed yet.

Also, manufacturers (as always) used the cheapest production available.

So, polyester has suffered a reputation it's going to be hard to shake.

4. My dear caty!
I hear ya!

I think people get down on polyester since it's not a natural fiber!

I too love how it makes clothes wear.......No wrinkles, and long-lasting!

However, it does tend to make clothes hotter since it doesn't breathe too well....

But in small quantities, it's terrific!

:hi:

7. I agree.
Not cool in the summer months. But fall, winter, and spring--great!

5. Polyester is made from petroleum
As is anything plastic...grocery bags, toys, PVC pipe, and more.

I personally don't like polyester against my skin, but can handle wearing clothing that has a blend in it

(stretch jeans :woohoo: )

However, without oil-based products, we wouldn't have much of the car parts/components of today, elastic for so many everyday items, or things so mundane as the knobs on our stoves, washers or dryers...and so much more.

6. someday it will fall apart
I shopped at thrift stores forever and some of the freshest stuff I used to wear out dancing was already 30 years old, and now some of it is hanging in my junk closet and it's starting to come apart! :o
You don't have to worry about your clothes falling off of you in public though.. not YET.

8. the '70s were kind of a low point for polyester, fashion-wise
I think some clothes made out of polyester used to be kind of icky, and that's when the jokes started. But I agree with you--it has a lot to recommend it (although I do prefer natural fibers most of the time).
